That's where my education is, too, and it's where I finally realized that art is an ill-defined, nebulous term, which is as it should be. To define art is to apply rules, and rules are deadly in the arts.

I love the story of that painting that the professor hated! In a certain way, it reminds me of a metal sculpture course I took when I was in my thirties and where, as in your case, everyone's offerings on a particular assignment were put on display anonymously for the entire class to discuss and criticize. When mine was placed on view, one of the (very young) students stated that it was "too commercial." I thought the teacher did an admirable job of containing his laughter. I didn't laugh because I was too busy trying to figure out what the devil that student was trying to say. That a lot of people would likely buy it and money dirtied the art in it? That it wasn't different enough and all art must be absolutely unique, God forbid that Degas do two paintings of dancers?

Art. I have no idea what it is.

For those that have noticed, I did delete a couple of posts in this thread because they were not in the spirit of the topic of the thread. Let's keep the conversations here civil and on topic. Debate is fine, but let's not get personal.

Back to our scheduled programming. :D

Those folks with a foot fetish might be inclined to disagree, Barbara. They might even pay a handsome sum for that photo of your tootsies! :D

I don't believe all photography to be art or all art to be worthy of praise. Maybe the real reason you ask yourself such a question is that you feel you must validate what you do because many don't recognize photography as an artistic medium of expression.

Is a well composed photograph with thoughtful consideration given to aperture, shutter speed, angle of view, foreground, background and lighting, a work of art ? Maybe not. But it sure is more than a mere snapshot.

Is a snapshot run through a couple of Photoshop filters that render it completely different than the original, art ? Maybe. But should it be held in higher regard than the beautiful photo that is not considered art. I don't think so.

For me the tag (art) matters little. If I am satisfied with my creations then I am a success.

Capturing a moment frozen in time is the true essence of good photography. If it evokes a response from the viewer then you have done well, whether it is considered art or not.

Just because some one sings are they a "singer", just because one says they paint are they a painter and is their work art. Well yes to both. Now whether they are any good is anybody's guess because that is personal preference. That is why Celine Dion and Puff Daddy both have fans, just probably not the same ones... things that make you hmnnnnn.. Cheers Jan

Take a close look at the lighter brown section in the centre of the image. Looks like a buttocks impression to me.

So maybe the "f" is missing from the word "art", as I had proposed earlier?

LOL
