Check your spelling for your sake ...

Postby gpsmikey » Sat Dec 01, 2007 9:36 am

Just a quick comment here - I realize that there are many people here
who have English as a second language, but especially in your subject
lines, please try and make sure you spell the key words right. Often
I see posts asking very good questions with a key word spelled wrong
(most often a simple typo). The problem is that a good discussion
gets going, the issue is solved with some clever solution then 2 months
later, when people try and search for the issue using the search tool,
they can't find it and a lot of good information vanishes from sight.
We all make spelling mizteaks (I hate spelling !! ), but at least in the
subject line it is important for the reasons I mentioned (also try and
have a subject line that makes sense instead of just "HELP!!").
It helps everybody down the road.

Also, when you do realize you have an error later, you can go back
and edit your own post. (the one that made me think of this this
morning was the "fornat for the web" question which nobody can
find with a search later but it is a common problem).

Thanks !! :D :D

I'd agree with you, Mikey, except for the fact that I've never, not even once, been able to find anything in the search utility--good spelling or bad. As a matter of fact, what I do get are loads of totally unrelated posts. If I use AND, NOT, etc., I simply get fewer results, which are still unrelated. Before lessons in spelling, I really need lessons in searching this forum. I do just fine in Google, but here there are certain words used in almost every single thread, and yet, those are the words most likely to be needed in a search: mask, layer, transition, etc.

Barbara -- very true -- there is a definite art to picking the right key words
to search for. You can usually find the answer to anything with google in
less than 3 seconds ... after spending 3 days trying to figure out what the
key words are you are supposed to be searching for :D I do understand what
you are saying though -- I have tried searches when I am convinced the search
engine has lost it's mind - I know the topic was discussed and I remember my
portion of it. Still can't find it, but usually I can find at least part of the thread
and go from there.

Peter -- didn't get a chance to look through my stuff, but I will try and search
for some info later this afternoon. I know I have some census information
from some church over there here some where. And yes, there is always the
color vs colour part of the spelling issue (and I will try both if I know them) - it
is the random letter substitutions that I have a problem with

Barbara, good to know its not only me! I was thinking just yesterday how I must be doing something wrong because I often get over a thousand matches for my searches.

I have actually had fairly good results sometimes when searching (don't forget
you can use a wild card in the search ... "stor* AND book" would match "story book"
"stork book" etc. On the other hand, I have also had searches come back with
0 results when I know (since I had written the post) those particular words were
in a post...... maybe the search engine was written by Photodex ??

No, it was written by the government. It has every earmark of it.

Barbara,

Sometimes I’ll search a thread via google too, it won't be current, and I'm not sure how often google crawls here, but you may get a reduced stable of hits...

example:
site:http://www.proshowenthusiasts.com "barbara c"

That's an excellent idea. I'll try it the very next time I'm on the hunt. Thanks for the tip.

Mikey, that's a good thing to remember. It is very frustrating to try to find a thread you know you read about but the search can't find it due to a misspelling.
