Delete images using thumbnails

Postby SteveLig » Sat Jan 08, 2011 7:30 pm

I would love to be able to delete images from the hard drive using the thumbnail list. Those check marks are handy for seeing which files are in use. Just select the others and delete.

Or is there another way to do this?

Thanks!
Steve

PSP doesn't seem to allow this . . . which is fine and probably safer for you when working on a show. Use Windows Explorer instead. It allows you to display the files as a list w/ or w/o details or as a thumbnail. When displayed as a thumbnail, it gives you the option to delete by visual means just as you seek to have in PSP.

I think it was conscious decision by Photodex to not allow deletion of files from within PSP/PSG because it's used to create. There've been times when I wanted to delete from w/in PSP but I think it's a safer option (usually) to not allow it... (but, I'm probably in a minority! :-) )

Hope this helps.

I did end up doing it through Windows Explorer. I made Explorer have the same number of thumbnails per row as PSP and that made it easier to see which images to delete. After each deletion, the thumbnails disappeared from Producer, so it stays in sync rather well.

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to copy a whole directory of image files into my workarea. But, when I started, I had no idea where the show was going to go. I just figured PSP would be able to do this for sure.

Thanks for the replies!!

Steve

Another way to end up with just the files you need is as follows:

Copy you image directory(s) into your 'work directory', (as you have done).
Create your slide show.
Do a 'File>Collect show files', to a specific directory.
This will collect your slides used, music and videos and the working .psh file in a directory structure in the specified directory (everything needed for the show to be reopened without the dross)
You can now delete your entire 'work directory'.

Since all my images are copies of the originals that I've placed in a folder for the show--a lot of people do this--not being able to delete what I don't want just adds to the time required to put together a show. However, here's an interesting fact: You CAN delete a folder in ProShow. Knowing this, when I'm sorting through the images, trying to get rid of what I won't be using, I create a folder called "Garbage" or whatever strikes my fancy at the time. I move all the pictures I don't want into it, often not bothering to delete the folder until I'm at the end of building the show. Then all it takes is a right-click to get rid of the trash.

A number of us have put in the request for the ability to delete files. Personally, I find it a tad insulting that Photodex thinks we need to be protected from our desire to delete things. And so what if we delete something we didn't intend to delete? Just restore it from the Recycle bin. Furthermore, why give us the far more destructive ability to delete a folder and not a simple file?

This is more of a work flow issue than a feature request.

Rob, you're absolutely right, and Photodex ought to be nagged about it. (I still don't get the logic of "allowing" us to delete an entire folder but not a wee file.)
