Magnifying Glass - I KNOW I saw it recently!

Postby hiloduffer35 » Sun Sep 23, 2007 11:37 am

Just getting back to working with slideshows after a rather traumatic and tiring year and I NEED something that I saw on this forum recently, but can't find now. I have a very old photo that I need to use the magnifying glass to zoom in one person. Can anyone help? I'm still w/PSG 2.6. Also, I note that there is a a version 3.0. Do we get to pay for this upgrade???
Thanks.

Magnifying Glass

Postby hiloduffer35 » Sun Sep 23, 2007 12:25 pm

Thanks, Brenda - you answered one of my questions and most of the other part!!!!! Thanks for both. The magnifying glass was used in the post you provided, however, I believe I saw one that someone used (wish I had been paying more attention!) with a hockey foursome and it actually looked as though it was magnifying the faces of the team members. I don't know if that technique can be used in PSG, but am hoping (1) I can find it and (2) I can use it in PSG.
Again, thanks.

Elizabeth,
I think you are thinking about a show by Dave Fitzpatrick: Try this link:

Dave Fitzpatrick did the trick with the 4 hockey players. His writeup on how
he did it (based on a "magnifying glass" sample from another user ) was
posted in the Yahoo group back on March 4,2007 -- here is the link to his writeup
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/pspr ... ssage/2559

To make life easier, here is what he posted in that group:

Earlier, I saw Dale's tutorial on the magnifying glass. Well, you
know me and my never ending quest for new special effects, so I
thought this offered some fresh possibilities if mixed with some
smooth kf motion and a layer mask or two.

So this is what I did is:

(1) saved the mag glass as a png
(2) also made a mask of the "glass" portion of the mag glass.
(3) selected an image and duped a 200% image on a PSP slide. Layer
masked the 200% image with the mag glass mask.
(4) using Kfs, moved the mag glass from player to player and matched
the mag glass motion with the mask.
(5) set each players face on the 200% image to the center of the mag
glass at each of the Kfs and just let PSP take care of smoothing the
motion.

Here is what I got:

http://www.photodex.com/sharing/viewsho ... 0634&alb=0

Thanks, Dale, for the great idea of using a magnifying glass. I
think that for group photos where everyone's face is too small to be
seen clearly, this gives a great method for highlighting each person
in a very interesting way, rather than just blowing the photo up and
then panning across the screen.

Dave

Jerry, didn't mean to ignore you, just forgot to tell you that both you and Mickey were on point w/the location and my "Monday morning" eyes (and brain) just forgot to tell you thanks, too.

Hello, everybody. I've just joined this forum today and I've already learned a lot. I am pretty new to ProShow, so I am still trying to learn all the new tricks. I really like this magnifying glass idea, but I do not understand the instructions. Can someone please help me how to do this? I have the mag glass, but I can't seem to get it to work. Thanks a bunch to everybody.

Heidi,
Welcome to the forum.
Are you using ProShow Gold or Producer? I think that the magnifying glass effect was done using producer .. I noticed that
Kfs (key frames) are mentioned and Gold does not have Kfs.

Sometimes there are "work arounds" that can be done to get the same effects as kfs, but I'm not sure in this case.
Stay tuned and I'm sure someone will let you know on this.

Heidi, welcome to the forum.
I used this effect on a map. Maybe a screenshot of my layers will help you.
Take a look here: http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9476/magnifyxt0.png

David's explanation says it all.

Bear in mind that all three layers must move together and use the very same keyframes: the magnifying glass, the mask and the enlarged map.
The "normal" sized map stays fixed (in my case).

It is not an easy effect, and keyframes are a must.
Good Luck.

I finally had some time to play around with producer and I was able to figure it out. Your screenshot was a huge help. Thanks for your assistance. I am learning a lot from everyone from this site.
