Sending .exe files

Please can anyone explain? - Hope I'll can explain myself!

I sent .exe files (via yousendit.com). First time the file downloaded O.K. but subsequent attempts when recipient tried to download file a message came up that it was not the right type of file. The files (in my "ProShow .exe Files" folder) do show their .exe extensions so I must have done something right there! My prob is why yousendit.com is showing this 'wrong file type'. What am I doing or not doing? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not played with "yousendit.com", however, if this is some
sort of FTP transfer thing (or uses FTP), then you may be running
into the binary vs ascii file type issue. FTP has two transfer modes
one for ascii (and it will "help you" with CR/LF as appropriate for
the system) and binary where it is a straight transfer. You may
be running into something like that. The other thing that comes
to mind is many systems filter .exe files (and other types too).
For example, where I work, any .zip file sent in is stripped off.
The trick is to name it something else (.zap or whatever), send it
in then rename it again. You may be seeing one of those issues.
You might also have the user check the file size (number of bytes
etc) and see if it matches what you think you put up there. Also
try putting the .exe file inside a zip file and letting the user try to
download that - see if that works.

Thank you for your response. All sounds a bit above this old girl's head though! However nothing ventured nothing gained, will see how I get on and use my son-in-law as the guinea-pig for some more trials.

The problem with so many of these problems is there are usually
a number of steps (any one of which) that can be the problem.
The trick is trying to try enough things to figure out which one
of the hoops someone has put the plastic wrap over causing it
to fail. If you are lucky, you can find a set of easily reproducable
conditions that always fail ... if you are unlucky, it only fails on
Tuesday when there is a full moon and you are standing on your
left foot ... sometimes. You might try the zip file test first (put the
exe in a zip file) which essentially puts a "wrapper" around the
file. See if that works. Good luck !! (getting fairly late over on
your side of the pond - nap time often helps these things !! )

Kinda butting in there.....but....

Sending .exe's? In a word: DON'T!

Unless the receiver knows you and are forewarned to expect an .exe, it's a bad idea to send shows in that format.

I have a personal policy of never running .exes from an unknown and unverified source. Haven't had a virus infection on my computers as a result.
Many other folks have similar policies, and if they don't they probably should have.

Post/send a .px, .mpg, .swf or some such instead.

My 2 cents worth.

Very true -- I was responding on the assumption that the destination
expected the email with the exe (although it had not been actually
stated in the original post). If it is not something I expect from
someone I know, it gets burned on the spot !!!

Thanx for responses folks.
Yes, the .exe file WAS expected - I wouldn't have been trying to send otherwise. Problem is sorted out now in any case, though I haven't a clear notion what I had been (or not?) doing originally!

When I am trying out something new instead of bothering some one else with it. On the recieving end I send it to my self then I can play with it until I get it right.

25 year sessions! - a novel way of looking at things! (a shame our bodies don't recycle very well!)
