35mm slides
For those of you doing 35mm slide projects, maybe you can answer a question for me. A customer brought me a box of slides to put on dvd. I took in the slides without looking at them other than to get a count. These are Minolta slides taken in 1968 in Viet Nam. The slide are mounted in 35mm forms, but the film itself is very small, measuring 1/2 in by 3/8 in. I can scan them and put them in Proshow, but can hardly see them. I can't resize them enough to get a good picture. I've tried higher resolution scanning, but it didn't help much.
Has anyone here hit this situation and if so, how did you handle it. I'm tempted to give them back to him and have him get a pro to enlarge them. Any other suggestions.

Re: 35mm slides
Those were made with a half frame 35mm camera. You could fit twice as many pictures/slides on a roll. I guess they were relatively popular back then.
I had one myself, in Vietnam in 1966-67, but I only used it for pictures, not slides. For my 35mm standard size slides I scanned at 1200 dpi and they come out fine. If you scan those at 2400 dpi they should display okay in PSP, or any other program. They would come out at about 1200x900, which is a decent size.

Thanks Joe, I'll give it a try. I did try higher resolutions, but didn't get as high as 2400.

Hello
Do you use a film scanner ? You cannot do it with a document A4 scanner...

I used an Epson Perfection 2480 scanner that did film/slides as well as documents. It has since died and gone to scanner heaven and I have replaced it with an Epson V550 scanner. They both came with all the attachments and adapters needed to do film negatives or slides.
In my case, the 1200dpi gave good results on a standard slide. I tried 2400dpi and couldn't see any difference quality wise and the output was 4X the size so I stayed with 1200dpi. Never had 1/2 frame slides so I'm just postulating that 2400 dpi will give about the same results as a full frame at 1200dpi.

Hello Joe
I agree with you. My question was for Lynn.
A friend of mine had that sort of slide with 2 view and scanned them with a film scanner.
Epson V550 is both film and documents scanner but most of flat beds are unable to scan correctly films.
