Thinking about getting a larger monitor. I am getting old - thought it might help me see things better.

Did a search but responses go back to 2007. Think things have changed since then.

Any recommendations that don't cost $1000 +?

I use multiple monitors, 1920 x 1080 x 60 hz. I have found it much easier on my eyes as well as ease of work. There are many monitors out there that you can get for less than $200. Depends upon if you want backlit, anti-glare, resolution etc. Right now there are some great New Years deals out there.

I'm using two Auria EQ276W 2560x1440 monitors (Display Port and HDMI) and a Samsung SyncMaster (DVI) 1680x1050 monitor (it's one I recycled from my previous computer). All are using 60Hz. I like the extra screen space the higher res monitors give me and the fact that I can use two monitors with ProShow and still have another one available for other things.

Search around, there are quite a few decent monitors for not much cash ... If you go the multiple monitor route (once you work with 2 or more, you don't want to go back to a single monitor), your video card simply needs to be capable of supporting them.

One issue to give consideration to is how well it reproduces colors. While some monitors are great for programming etc, if you are trying to accurately edit images in Photoshop for example, you need to make sure the monitor you get can handle a reasonable range of colors accurately (then calibrate it with something like Datacolor spyder4pro or one of those types of things). Then there are the color accurate monitors that, while beautiful, require to mortgage your house to buy them. It has been a few years since I was looking at monitors, so all my data is out of date - at the time I bought my current monitor, the Samsung SyncMaster 226BW (what I got) got pretty good ratings without breaking the bank.

I had to sell one of my twins to get the money for my monitor but I did get a nice monitor )

Have you given the new 4K monitors a look?
Take a look at another option. I hope it is not out of your price range (less than $500)
