Yes, it has always been a game of numbers (and manipulation in many cases). I remember one quite a few years back where it was the battle of the graphics chips. To establish the benchmark for the graphics chip, there was a series of tests - one of them involved copying the string "the quick brown fox ... " from one place to another some number of times. One chip came out with outstanding results and they were claiming in their ads how fast it was based on those numbers. All was well until someone tried a slight variation - instead of "the quick brown fox .. " they used "THE QUICK BROWN FOX ... " - same string but in caps. Should have made no difference, but instead, the huge speed advantage claimed by the manufacturer dropped right out the bottom - seems they had built a test in the silicon of the chip to test for that string and return phony numbers. There were a lot of red faces on that one when it surfaced. Same people are our politicians now ...

This article has some interesting stuff in it including a mention of the "quick brown fox .." hoax - http://electronicdesign.com/lighting/wh ... uff-anyhow
