Wingdings are fun

Postby Aida » Mon Feb 03, 2014 7:52 pm

The other day, having nothing better to do, I decided to become better acquainted with Webdings & Wingdings 1,2,3. Over the years I’d been using them sparingly when creating one of my Producer shows, when I would occasionally use a webding or wingding to create an imprompty frame for a title page or for a photo.

A year or so ago I came upon this Printable Map of the Wingdings Fonts. It's a really handy printable sheet for an at-a-glance view of all the available Wingdings/Webdings symbols. I had forgotten about it until recently. You can view this printable map & - if interested - also download it by clicking here:

http://speakingppt.com/2011/10/31/finally-a-printable-character-map-of-the-wingdings-fonts/

Below is a sample of what I did with wingdings & webdings the other day. I used the caption format features of Proshow 5, & I experimented with size, color, the use of texture & image on the captions [image, gradient, zoom]. I then took a screenshot of my “creations.” I'm posting three of them below.

Anyway, that’s another tool in my tool box . . . Who knows, but on another bleak, rainy day with nothing better to do, I might just be inspired to use wingdings in a “creative” way to enhance a slide or something . . . :D

Aida, you're right. Wingdings are definitely fun! They're what I've used to create the illusion of captions emerging from beneath layers...until Producer 6 came along, that is. Your next journey is to go out onto the free font sites and revel in all the other "dings" out there. Warning: You can get lost for an entire day.

Hi Aida,

The chart like this comes in very handy, yes. :D THANKS!

A while ago, I installed a number of dingbat fonts for use in slideshows and made an visual chart in excel of the letters and associated images. I often forget I have them installed. These charts save a lot of wasted time trying to find the right letter/image combination. The names of dingbat fonts are not always easy to associate with the kind of pictures they represent and they also do not always show up as a typed out font name in the font list in ProShow and instead are just the tiny pictures

I'm happy to share the chart I made. But those who want to use it would need to find, download and install the dingbat fonts seen in the list from the internet into their computer so they can be seen in the chart, else the correct images can't be seen in the spreadsheet. I emailed the file to Mike the moderator to see if he will put it in the members created files section. If he agrees, I'll edit this post to include the link to the file for forum members.

The one I've probably used the most is Nymphette, which are decorative flourishes. I've used Talkies, KR Fabulous Fall, Fantas Second, Carr Xmas Dingbats, Border Cats and Animal Tracks too.

Here is the complete list of dingbat fonts in the chart.

Animal Tracks
AP_ Just Hearts
Border Cats
Butterflies
Carr Xmas Dingbats
Fantas Second
Fontco Flares
Freaking Stars
Holiday
Jokerman Alts Let
KR Fabulous Fall
Lots Of Frames
Nymphette
SL Christmas Silhouettes
Talkies
WWFlakes

Aida

Once you have discovered Dingbat fonts, there's no going back. Yes, you can use them directly in Producer, but you can experiment further and create lovely backgrounds and additional elements for your shows using Dingbat fonts in conjunction with even the simplest of graphics programs.

I used Dingbat Fonts 'Roses Roses' and 'More Roses' by Sassy Graphics, together with Serif's Craft Artist software to create the layouts/slides below:

Create patterned or embossed papers/backgrounds:

Do it with Dingbats! :D
Windows 7 HP 64-bit, Intel i5 2500K Quad Core, 8GB RAM, 1.0GB Ge-Force NVIDIA GTX 560i, Adobe Photoshop CS5, Producer 6 (GPU Benchmark was 336, now 324), a big old Canon 20D and a funky Canon Powershot G15

Iris, the "grunge" page is particularly beautiful. Who would even guess that dingbats were used!

Well, I've just started on this journey. But what if I become a "ding" addict? Is there
a Dings Anonymous that one can join?

Hi Debbie,
I've downloaded the Nymphette dings. Curlicues, arabesques - very nice.
Thanks for your list of favs. Will be looking at them in the near future.
