Interesting malware info from Avast

Postby BarbaraC » Wed Apr 24, 2013 7:48 am

According to research that Avast found (done by a company in Germany), we're safer using Google to do our searches than Bing:

"AV-TEST evaluated about 40 million websites and found that Google is the safest way to search if you want to avoid malware. Its rival Bing delivered five times more malicious websites in search results than Google."

In the Avast blog, they mentioned that, following the Boston Marathon bombing, a lot of people were quickly online doing searches for news, and since Bing doesn't filter as well as it should, some people were open to bad news of another kind.

:D Haha In the Netherlands we even have a verb for using Google. Googelen. Most of the people in Holland and in Europa are using Google instead as Bing.

I checked out Bing early on, and I couldn't figure out why I'd want to use it, so I went back to Google.

Regardless of the search engines, browsers, and virus checkers we use, we still have to remember to not click on everything we see. Evil jackasses are so easy to find.

Numbers can be misleading too. In the survey they found the percent of malware sites for Google was .000002% of those checked, for Bing it was .000011%.

And that's how they got the 5X worse number for Bing. We are constantly manipulated by advertisers with numbers. That's why we all have to do our homework before making choices about anything.

I don't use Bing very often, but I don't think it will deter me from using it once in a while based on a survey that chooses to emphasize a % that isn't really important.

Good point, Joe. What leads you to use Bing on those rare occasions?
