Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
Maybe it's just me, but until I went to Windows 7, I was used to pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Task Manager to shut down a misbehaving program. If anyone else is annoyed by the now 2-step process and is just as startled by the big screen colored an unfortunate blue (blue screens are always unwelcome), then here's the solution: Ctrl+Shift+Esc is the direct route. I'm going to have to get used to the new shortcut, but I'm determined to do it because I'm tired of my hair standing on end every time I see what used to be called The Blue Screen of Death.

Hi Barbara,
He who must be obeyed suggests right click on the taskbar and select "Start Task Manager"

Rosemary, I never thought to right-click the task bar!
That said, I've had some mighty freezes that leave no alternative but to use shortcuts. From now on, though, I'll make a beeline for the task bar. If it's functioning, I'll then go kill something that darned well deserves it.

Re: Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
Jean-Paul, you must have missed it in the initial post where I said, "Ctrl+Shift+Esc is the direct route." However, Rosemary's route is not only direct, but it's shorter.

Hi Barbara,
It happens to me regularly, it must be something in the water here LOL!!!
I see that you are a mouse lady and I am a keyboard guy. I guess I will stick with my old habits.

Re: Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
No, I'm a keyboard person. More often than not, the keyboard reaches the finish line long before the mouse. Dragging and dropping, of course, is a mousy sort of thing.

Re: Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
Speaking of task bar - in addition to the RIGHT click -> start task manager (which I have been using for a long time), are you aware you can also make the task bar double (or more) height ? Unlock it, drag the edge up then lock it again.

Re: Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
In addition to what Mikey said, you can also drag the task bar and dock it on the sides or the top. It does not have to stay on the bottom. Be forewarned, it will disorient almost all users if you move the taskbar.

No kidding - one of our common computers at work, one of the users has dragged it to the side. Drives me nuts (short drive though)

Speaking of the Task Bar.........You all should visit and investigate this program
http://www.truelaunchbar.com/?utm_sourc ... elaunchbar
This program converts your task bar (Tool Bar) into infinite launch pads (Single press launches) and/or menus......
Top, Bottom, sides.......it doesn't care
I haven't had an icon on my desk top in years.......
Works with all versions of Windows....including Win 8
Just an FYI

No way would I increase the height. There's enough garbage on the screen when trying to work as it is.

Re: Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
Well, if you want to organize things on the task bar a bit better, check out this link - he has a couple of utilities to organize stuff that should be right up your alley (I ran into this the other day looking for something else as usual).

Re: Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
They look like really cool little utilities for folks who have umpteen icons on the Desktop and in the Task Bar. I don't, but that's because if I haven't used something in x-number of months, I throw it out. This goes for the household too. Husband and son keep an eagle eye on me.

Re: Going DIRECTLY to the Task Manager
Call me a "neat freak" but I like to keep my desktop clean rather than having a bunch of icons covering my screen. To accomplish this task and still have instant access to all the programs that I use most often on my Windows 7 computer . . . I use a fantastic free utility program called "Rocket Dock".
Rocket Dock provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and total organization. With each item completely customizable there is no end to what you can add and launch from this dock. Take a look at the Rocket Dock website and watch the video to see what I mean.

The price is right and it works beautifully. You will wonder how you ever lived without Rocket Dock once you start using it, trust me
