Re: JAVA
First I had heard of it. Certainly sounds serious - I had a pop-up about updating Java on my Win7 machine here (listing Oracle as the source) which then informed me I was up to date. Hmmm - definitely bears watching. First the Seahawks lose at the last minute now Java is busted - one of those days

You can't have too many gadgets or too much disk space !!
mikey (PSP6, Photoshop CS6, Vegas Pro 14, Acid 7, BluffTitler, Nikon D300s, D810)
Lots of PIC and Arduino microprocessor stuff too !!

Re: JAVA
FYI...
In a statement given to CBS News, Security Exploration elaborated on the possible security flaw.
Although Java 7 Update 11 released by Oracle yesterday addresses the 0-day attack spotted in the wild, there are still unpatched security vulnerabilities that affect the most recent version of the software. Just to mention the bug #50 we reported to Oracle on 25-Sep-2012.
That doesn't necessarily mean users should skip the software update. Kurt Baumgartner, senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, tells CBSNews.com that it appears that Oracle fixed the issue at hand, but there are always going to be flaws in software.

Re: JAVA
Thanks so much Anna for the heads up. I was not aware of this problem.

Re: JAVA
I checked my Windows 7 laptop and Windows XP desktop and found my Firefox browser had flagged and disabled Java on both computers saying there was a security issue. I downloaded the latest Java 7, update 11 and installed it on both computers and now Firefox says that the Java security issue is no longer a problem

Re: JAVA
I checked, and Firefox (newest update) on my Win7 machine says nothing about disabling JAVA, probably because I don't have JAVA, and when downloading updates, Mozilla must detect what's there and what isn't. Yes, that must be it. After all, how can something that doesn't exist be disabled? (Just talking to myself out loud.)

Re: JAVA
Since I followed the disable directions, I haven't found any reason to turn it back on again. Haven't seen anything that doesn't work, so I'll keep it disabled.
This report makes me more sure that I don't want to change anything yet.

Re: JAVA
I'm really curious about why some people have Java installed. Is it used for a particular piece of software? For whatever reason, I don't have a trace of it on my computer.

Re: JAVA
Some banks offer a way of depositing checks from your home computer. If you have a scanner, they use java to control it for the scan of the check's front and back. Disabled java, no check scanning. (yes, some of these banks also have apps for smartphone which also allow deposit on demand . . .)
It's one of the few for which you'll need java and the only one I can think about at the moment (whatever they are, the java usage is not always evident). For most, this won't be a big deal at all.

Re: JAVA
That explains why I've no evidence of it on my computer. I'm somewhat of a Luddite.

Apparently what it does is create a mess, which results in a lot of humans ranting.
