problems adding avi formatted video clips
I have added video clips (avi format) from my digital camera with success in the past, but now PSP won't let me drop or add them in. It says it is not a recognized video format. Anyone else ever had this problem? What should I do next?
It depends on what you mean by "digital camera" -- if you are refering to a
still picture camera that can take "movies", that is probably in MJPEG format
and you will need a codec for that (there are some free ones). If you are
refering to a digital video camera that shoots in DV format, it should import
but it may be a codec issue. The "gotchya" here is the "avi format" - in
reality, an "avi" file is just a "wrapper" (container) for a number of different
formats. If you do a search of the forum for "codec" you will find lots of
information from others that have had issues reading some files. Let us
know just what format the video is (what type of camera it is from) and
we should be able to help more from there. There is also a very handy
free utility called "gspot" that will look at a file and tell you exactly what
codec was used to encode the file (be careful looking for "gspot" it has
other meanings as well, and no, I ain't goin' there ! ) If you search this
forum for "gspot" you should find additional information as well.

Pansy, welcome to the forum.
You could try deleting the opic.opt and def.phd files from where Producer is loaded in your 'Program Files' directory first and then restarting Producer.
The files will be recreated and this sometimes cures problems.

Wodka,
I also have a Canon PowerShot A610 and use ProShow Gold. PSG does accept the videos straight out of the camera with no conversion and the video and audio quality is excellent. I think your problem is a codec issue. The Canon video is AVI compressed with the MJPEG codec. I'm not sure if this codec is installed with the Canon camera software but if you need the codec the free K-Lite Codec Pack contains the MJPEG codec. It is possible that you already do have the codec installed and PSP just isn't recognizing it. In that case an uninstall and reinstall of PSP should solve the problem.
