Moving Shows:
Recently I have moved about six different shows to a new harddrive and to another partition and am having problems allowing them to work properly. It seems that I have broken a cardinal rule and need help organizing things on the new harddrive. Can I infact place shows on a different partition on the same harddrive and have them work properly? Any insite will be greatly appreciated. Richard...
Yes, you can move shows around and put them on different partitions
(I have done it a number of times). How much trouble it is depends
on a number of things. As far as I know, all of the paths to the media
you use in your show (slides, sound, video etc) are stored relative to
the show file (the .psh file) position. You can open your .psh file with
a text editor and see all the stuff - it is just text. When I create a
show, I create a top level folder for the show and sub-folders under
that for pictures, sound, video etc. and make copies of any pictures I
am using etc from my master storage to the local folders under the
show. When I move it around, moving that folder tree makes it easy.
If you don't do it that way, you end up with pointers relative to the
show file that now point at some strange location and you have to fix
that -- usually, not that bad because when it opens, it will tell you it
can't find whatever files and ask if you want to find them now - the
trick is remembering where they are !
Hope that helps - it can be done and how easy is determined by your
file structure.

Mikey and Richard,
Is the process Mikey described, part of the "collect shows" procedure, or do you create this structure in lieu of that? Do you do it before or after the collect?
What do you think would be the best process in transfering shows and related stuff to a new computer?
Thanks for getting this going Richard,
Jerry

I have never used the "collect shows" method -- I keep seeing grumbles
from people about things happening or not working the way they expect.
I create the directory structure for a show with the top level being usually
for the show then subfolders within that for sound, pictures, clip_art, video
etc. depending on just what I am putting in the show (often an "iso" sub
folder also where I will stuff the iso for the show). I keep everything in
that structure. Any pictures I use, I copy from my main picture archive
to the local structure for the show (disk space is cheap). When done
with the show, I delete the intermediate files (often uncompressed avi's
that I generated that may be 10-20 gigs), the pxc file that is a temp file
and all the backup copies of the show except for the latest one (main
psh file and 1 backup remain). I can archive that if I want and everything
is there. Seems to work the smoothest for me.

Mikey,
yeah ... I can see the wisdom in your system ...I'm always a bit wary when I turn complete control over to a machine. Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of "collect"!
BTW, I think I saw you post regarding this same system when I first joined this venue. As a raw newbie, it was kinda over my head ....I'm still a newbie, but not "raw" ... I have had my goose cooked on more than one occasion!
Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
I use a combination of Mikey's system and Collect Show Files. In the past I basically did the same as Mikey posted which is great if you remember to copy all your images to the show folder. I occasionally added a picture from another folder and forgot to copy it to my show folder. Later when I opened the show the file wasn't found. Now I set up folders and copy the files I plan to use for my show into them and when the show is pretty much finished I Collect Show Files to the same location. This ensures that I've got all the files. One word of caution if you do this though: be sure to check 'overwrite existing files' when collecting files or you will have multiple copies of the files. Unfortunately Collect Show Files does not save the Menu or files used to create a custom menu or I would use this method exclusively.

Barbara,
I meant to thank you for your input during the discussion regarding collect. Sorry it took so long. I was just reviewing some of the threads when I came across this one.
Since collect does not include the menu etc files, do you manually place them in the same folder?
Thanks again,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,
Yes I try to remember to put them in the same folder where I collected the show files. However there are times I've forgotten and have deleted the files and had to recreate them. This is why I really like the "collect show files" feature. I just wish it would "collect" the menu files too.

I also follow what Mickey described. I have come to the conclusion of not relying on Proshow for housekeeping; although what I create is far less in sophistication than what you folks do. I basically copy all the images to a working folder, from the master folder where images are first dowloaded from camera, or the scanner, then do all the Photoshoping, Irfanviewing, etc,. I use Windows Explorer to arrange images as I want them to appear in the show, and when I am done, I just dump the images in the folder in Proshow time-line. It's probably not the best method (anyone chuckling yet?) but this workflow works for me. This way I have everything in one folder for a given show.

Hi Barbara,
I guess you can't get everything ... Lots of the menus that I have encompass multiple shows, so I doubt that Photodex will change the collect shows to offer that feature. I really like the way Mikey does it but I don't know that I am that disciplined.
I think for me the "combination" procedure will work best for me until I get more organized.
Thanks again,
Jerry
