DVD menu with sound failing

I have our most recent vacation split into 8 shows and combine them onto a single DVD for playing.
That works great and through several iterations of changes to the shows, I finally stopped making changes.
My final tweak was to add sound to the main menu while waiting to play the dvd.
So...I chose custom menu and selected an MP3 music track (select sound file). The DVD creates, but when I put it in a player, it doesn't work (no menu ever appears). I tried it on multiple players, but same results. Ideas?
