Granny Wright's Box

Postby trailertrash » Fri Apr 01, 2016 3:40 am

My Gran died in 1984 and her surviving son who occupied the ancestral pile died in 1990. When we cleared the house we found a box of old documents and stuck it in a trunk and it lay there till we again cleared out some of the ' Rubbish ' in 2014. When I went through the box with some patience, I was astounded to find papers and pictures and cuttings and letters going back to 1914! My Gran had captioned almost every picture in the box and kept every little detail from her life with my Grandad. No-one knew what this box contained till 2014. Buried on the bottom were my Grandad's Belt Buckle and Cap Badge from his service in the 1st/5th Gordon Highlanders in the Somme 1915 - 1918. Slide #24 shows a picture of him in France 1915, wearing the belt. I cleaned it up and wore the buckle at my own Regimental Dinner in March 2016. The 1st time it has been worn in almost 100 years. The body of the pictures are of My Grandparents and their sons before and during the Second World War, inc a picture of my Grandad as a homeguard volunteer in 1942. Thankfully they all came through, from my dad serving in the Far East and Burma with the 14th Army and his brother serving in the Med with the 1st Army and Royal Artillery and the youngest brother serving with the Gordon Highlanders in Italy till 1946. My gran actually wrote on the back of one pic " Charlie home on holiday from the war ". God bless her. I'm nowhere near finished with her box and will break it into parts. What a wonderful treasure for the entire family! I loved the "story" presented and the music that went with it! I also liked that the people in each picture were identified. Well done.
