Need a quote for a show?

Postby BarbaraC » Sat Apr 30, 2011 12:47 pm

I just added a bundle of quotes to ProShowThink that you might find handy for that show you're building or for one in the future. They run the gamut from animals to kids to love to graduation and other stuff too.

QUOTES at PROSHOWTHINK

I would have enjoyed sharing all my collected quotes with you, but some are, shall we say, unsuitable for slide shows.

Love these, Barbara! Thanks for sharing.

Ellen, I'll probably add to them now and then because I always have my eye open for a well-turned phrase. My favorites in the mix, by the way, are those by Ogden Nash and one by Rita Rudner. They hit those nails right on the head. :D

I'm stealing your quote right now!

Not fair Barbara, can only imagine what the unsuitable quotes are, wouldnt those fall under the unquotable quotes category?
Thanks for sharing! I posted the same comment on your blog, I tend to repeat myself these days (a sign of things to come?), but finding a perfect quote is just as important (and taxing) as finding the perfect song. I will add the quotes to the library.

Forrest, you're entirely welcome.

If, like Ellen, you have a favorite, send it to me. Same goes for anyone else reading this.

Greg, my unquotable quotes tend to be those that I just can't find any situation in which to quite suddenly spout them and thus seem incredibly clever. A lot of Mark Twain falls into that category.

Who said it? Not sure what kind of show it would be used for. Any ideas?

Oops... I messed up on the word can/can't (initially said can). I just corrected it. Sorry.
I don't know who first said it if you're referring to my post.

I read it correctly, never noticing the typo. So, I did a brain typo which negated the typo. 8)

Maybe it's one of those old sayings like "you catch more flies with honey..." or "penny wise, pound foolish." Nobody knows who first said most of those things...

...which reminds me of something my son watched happen some years ago. I don't remember what the phrase was, but he came out with a good one, and his friends picked up on it. They used it with other people, who in turn used it with still more. In a matter of months, it had spread clear across the country. I kid you not.

There are several versions and a bunch of attributions. The most common version I've seen (many times) is

"You can’t direct the wind, but you can adjust your sails"

The most common attribution is Yiddish or German proverb.

Game trivia note:it's the voice over (done by Leonard Nimoy) you get in Civilization 4 when you discover sailing.

Dick, what's "Civilization 4"?

A game would be the simple answer :)

Or as Wikipedia says about Civilization IV

It's part of "Civilization is a series of turn-based strategy video games produced by Sid Meier. Basic gameplay functions are similar throughout the series, namely, guiding a civilization on a macro-scale from prehistory up to the near future. As of March 12, 2008, the Civilization franchise has sold more than 8 million copies..."

I've been happily :D playing and otherwise involved with Civ and it's cousins for over a decade. There's a ton of history rolled into the game.

Oh, yeah, it's also: Jeopardy $2000 in Games: a game who's opening music, Baba Yetu is the Lords Prayer in Swahili. 8)

And just remember -- you did ask!
