First Frosh Football Game

Postby Jerry Cole » Fri Aug 31, 2007 7:41 pm

My grandson Steven and his best friend Kenny played their first freshman football game last evening, and I gained a new respect for Sports Photographers. I really just wanted to watch the game! The light was bad, the action was fast and the field too far away. Not to mention keeping an eye on my 3 yr. old grandson (who thinks he is 14).

I quickly put this together. I'd like some tips from any of you who know how to shoot and present these events. :?

I used a 18-200 zoom on my camera.

shooting sports in poor lighting (like highschool games) is actually,
not that hard. Start with about $20,000 in a good low noise camera
body and a FAST expensive long lens. Maybe not quite that bad,
but in low light with fast motion, there really is no substitute for
a fast lens ($$$) and a good low noise camera body that can shoot
clean at 1600 ISO. The only other idea I had (I have yet to figure
out how to pull it off) is to manage to synchronize all those people
in the stands with their little cameras and flashes - get them all to
go off when I trip my shutter !!.

Now, for some cheap entertainment, you want to see a BIG flash,
check out this link (you may have to unwrap it):

I sure hope the engineer knew that was going to go off !!

Jerry-

I have had a simular problem. I have a hard time of taking decent photos in a gym. I suppose they use almost the same bad lighting for football as they do for basketball. As those lights are extremely expensive, I don't see the schools shelling out the dough to help us, the poor family members, to take better shots. I'm about to try my unsteady hand at the "Friday Night Lights". We'll see how it goes.

Didn't answer your question, and I'm sorry for that. Just felt your pain :)

Scott

Jerry

Nice job and the photos looked great. Got to love that 18-200 lens. Glad that football has started and I can get away from baseball ... also means that cooler weather is coming soon. Thanks for posting.

Mikey, Scott, Vinny, Bob,
Thanks for taking the time to view and "share my pain". Ok, I guess I'm gonna hafta do it the hard way and actually work to figure out what will work for me. I think I deleted twice as many shots as I kept. They really stunk! I've never done much more than quickey snapshots at other sports events. Usually before and after the games. So ...I'm gonna keep searching, but that's fun too.

Mikey, I am going to try to see if I can push the ISO higher without getting too much noise. Back in the day I used to shoot tri-X ... so I tried 400 to start. Obviously that's gotta change cause I checked my pockets and don't seem to find that spare 20 grand!

Bob, I do love the 18-200 glass, but it's a lot better than I am!

Vinny, Yup... 3 years old, going on 14!

Scott, Good luck my friend, I'll be looking for those FNL!

Jerry, here are a couple of threads to check out for some ideas.

Two noise reduction utilities I have seen good comments about
are Noise Ninja and Neat Image. I have not used either one,
but they are another tool in the toolkit.

Jerry, here is some additional information on taking pictures in poor lighting
and noise reduction methods you may find interesting (I had these earlier, but
was unable to get into the forum) - the first, while a couple of years old,
is a comparison of the various noise reduction utilities out there under actual
test conditions. Have a look see.

First Frosh Football Game

Postby hiloduffer35 » Tue Sep 04, 2007 10:03 am

Jerry,
I have been run into (and knocked down, splatted, etc.) at basketball games in pathetically lighted gyms, hit by baseballs, run over by T-ballers, but only tried football photos a couple of times. Face it, guess we're just great parents/grandparents and not professional photographers. You have excellent shots, the music fits perfectly and you created a "fun to watch" show although none of us knew the players!!! Wish I could afford that $20,000 plus unit, too, but........... (then I'd feel like I .had to create perfect shots).
Also, wish I had time to play w/a slideshow - have several batches of photos and some nice ideas, but, alas, I have to work (a golf course owns us and I'm a contract Paralegal, too!), so I have to enjoy through the work of others right now. Keep up the good work.

No seriously, the light did not look that bad at the game.

A couple of questions for you:
1. What camera body are you using?
2. What is the appeture of the 18-200 lens?

Here is a great forum you can find a lot of useful information in (that's how I found this forum) http://www.dgrin.com/

I don't think you really need to drop $20 on gear to make those shots come out. You could have a monster game set-up for under $3k. Canon 30d and an an IS f2.8 70-200 lens.

Welcome to the forum, and thanks fror the link to Digital Grin.

I shoot a Nikon D-80 and have been using my 18-200 VR glass (3.5-5.6) for the games.
Thanks for watching,

Just a thought

Have you tried to capture the game/ shots with a camcorder and then try a screen capture of the shots you want to keep. Just a thought. I don't have time right now to watch your show, but will ASAP. Good Luck, Ann
