Sort By: Picture Taken On

I am new to the Forum (Just joined), and I apologize if this suggestion/request has been mentioned before. My feature suggestion is the ability to sort images by "Picture Taken On". This option is useful when working with pictures taken by different cameras/photographers.

It is missing in the current version as can be seen in the menu below:



In other words, I would like to be able to sort images by the date from the EXIF information and not by the date/time the file was last edited (Actual option in PSP) as is possible in Windows, right now, and shown in the image below.

I had a need for this last week. Two of us were shooting an event and our camera numbering systems did not match up. I was lucky, since we database catalogue the pics, it has this capability, but we outputyed the files with a sequential number appended to the start of the filename in order to get the correct order. If you do this, don't forget to supply the leading zeros or else you still may not get the correct sort order.

I know this is an afterthought but If you have more than one person shooting an event, having both/all cameras synced to the same date and time will help your ability to place the images in sequence of time for use a slide show.

Thanks for the reminder. In this case the cameras did have the appropriate time and date signature. However, the video editor that I was using, sorted by the filename. Since the images carried the correct date/time stamp in the Exif, we were able to basically rename the files to get them into the correct sequential order.

I use a handy utility called "Set Name To Time" ( one place you can get it is

to rename all the pictures from my camera(s). It even has a string substitution
feature so I can add "mikey" to pictures from my camera, "jan" to the pictures
from my wife etc. All names now sort by date/time. The format I use is as follows
DC_080329_1135_34__mikey.jpg for example where the 08 is 2008, the
03 is March, the 29 is the 29th and the time is 11:35 am and 34 seconds shot
with my camera (it takes the camera make from the EXIF and translates to
the user name with the string substitution). So far, this has worked very
well for me. YMMV

Just been really busy with family and work etc. Have not had much of a chance to
play with computer stuff recently. Hopefully will be able to spend more time here
soon. I need to put together a couple of shows -- my "little" puppy is now about
60 pounds of "energizer bunny". Remember the cute little 10 pound puppy ??

Mikey thanks for the recommendation. I downloaded Set Name to Time directly from the Author's webpage at:http://www.storcksoftware.com/download . By the way, he has now available version 2.4.9 and let me tell you that I found this application above my expectations. It is very flexible. In my case I was needing to sort close to 2,000 pictures taken over a two week period by different photographers. Problem solved!. Thanks again

Welcome! It hasn't and it's a good one. I wanted that on the show I just finished! Need to have this one show up in the PSG "Feature Requests" too!.
