What Camera? Nikon D40 6.1 imp 2.5" or other?
I'd like to help my daughter get a camera for her graduation gift, do you know of a camera that is great for becoming a photographer (she's really talented at taking picutres and is considering this). Here's a link for some cameras on sale at Costco, I was wondering about the Nikon D40 6.1imp 2.5" 18-55 & 55-200 lens for $549.
For near this price, is there another camera out there that you would recommend? Do you know about the camera mentioned? What do you think of it? Thanks

I Have a D40, a superb camera. Many good reviews everywhere, do a search in Google & you will see what a great camera this is.

I just bought a D60. It will cost almost double the cost of the d40 with the lenses. I don't think that you should gauge your decision on the cost of just the camera. The real money will be spent on lenses. I have the 18-55 and the 55-200. Both are good VR lenses. However, I was able to borrow a couple of more expensive lenses that put mine to shame. Needless to say, I am now actively pursuing the purchase of a lens that cost more than my original investment in the D60. That said, the d40 would probably be a good place to start if she is a beginner. I believe it is classified as an entry level dslr by Nikon.

Here is my 2 cents. It's all I could afford No really, I enjoy my D40. I almost got the D40X (the D60 wasn't out yet) but after doing a little research I decided that the D40 was plenty camera for me especially for the price. Some other reasons I decided on the D40 over the D40X... The D40X (and now the D60) are nothing more than a D40 with more pixels. The D40X and D60 have slower shutter speeds with flash outdoors(1/200 vs.1/500). This faster sync speed is invaluable for use with flash outdoors. Both the 10megapixel D40X/D60 have the same size sensor as the less expensive 6MegaPixel D40, but both have less basic light sensitivity due to the smaller pixels needed that are cramed onto the same-sized sensor.
When it came down to it I really didn't need 10mp. As it turns out 6megaPixel is plenty. Saves a lot of file space. That said, both are great cameras and really light weight compared to the more expensive professional rigs that utiliize full sensors.

Being a great photographer has very little to do with the camera and everything to do with the person using it. I wouldn't lose any sleep over which to pick--there are a bunch of good cameras out there and the D40 is one of them. If she gets really serious, she'll end up upgrading or getting something else down the road anyway.

I couldn't agree more. Until recently, my camera was the Fuji S7000. I had that camera for several years and got wonderful results from it.
