It's a wide-ranging piece of behavior. The towhees that visit me sit as still as a statue until I press the shutter release. It's an underground movement and a threat to the entire world that's called the Towhee Conspiracy.

I totally agree! As soon as I get fed up and put the camera away back he comes and poses like you please! We shall have a talk with them Barbara. Cheers Jan

Some of those buggers can be tough, but in your case, that is not motion
blur - the camera focused on the tree behind him. If it was motion blur,
you would see blur on one side as he moved and parts (typically the feet)
would be clear because they were not moving as he jumped off). Not
sure on which camera you have, but that is where I lock mine on center
focus and in the continuous mode (if I let it pick from the 5 focus
zones, it almost always picks something different than what I was
shooting at  )

Thanks Mikey, I will keep that in mind. I did have it on center focus, but he moves so fast I had focused on a pine siskin right before him and then clicked when he got there so I could get him! LOL cheers Jan

Jan, I fear that Mikey may be in cahoots with the towhees. Why else would he blame it on a tree?

I had a different version of this today when two squirrels got into such an argument that one of them threw the other one clear out of the tree. Thump! I, in the meantime, was suffering from camera in absentia.

I was trying the same with a red wing black bird today. Darned bird knew just when I was going to push the button to take his pic ... I'd just get him into focus and BOOM, he's gone chasing some bird or finding a new location to sit at and sing! I had to give it up for the closeup shots (I NEED that 500mm lens!).
