The IR newsletter

For those of you who've never come across it, check out the Imaging Resource site at http://www.imaging-resource.com. Besides everything else they do, they put out a weekly newsletter which I've subscribed to since their very first edition, always finding something useful in it. This past week, there was a piece about resizing images some of you might find helpful. Go here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/IRNEWS/ and then scroll down to "Beginners Flash: Resizing an Image." It explains in everyday language how to resize an image to get the best quality possible. Also and in very clear language, it explains exactly what's going on when you resize.

Barbara -- thanks for posting that link. That's a site I've either missed or hadn't bookmarked but it's a good one.

Dick, it's one of the premier sites for camera gear, and I wouldn't think of buying anything without going to IR first. It's definitely not a site for fine-art photographic technique--it's not their focus--but when it comes to all kinds of equipment and dealing with that equipment, IR's the place.

I looked at his reviews of both cameras in my house and one other I know well and his comments matched mine pretty well. I calibrated his view of the hardware with his (very favorable) review of my Fuji S9100 which matched my thoughts closely, so it's likely that his comments on others would be similar to my impressions as well--a good thing to know for any reviewer. Technically, his review of both cameras was pretty thorough, tho' his view of the S9100's high ISO shots is a bit more forgiving than mine and other reviews.

One thing to think about with this site as well as others like it is that, when they feel something is below par, they have to be a bit subtle about saying so. This is because their livelihood depends on the good graces of the manufacturers, who send them the equipment to test and review. (The equipment is always returned when the testing is done.) If a reviewer just out-and-out bad mouths a piece of equipment, he's unlikely to get future business. They have to somehow balance everyone's needs while doing the reviews. I know this from having discussed it with just such a reviewer. Thus, if you get used to a particular site's style of review, you start seeing the ways in which they say "this is good, but..." I've gotten used to IR, others have gotten used to places like Steve's Digicams. It's annoying to have to read between the lines, but it can certainly be done.

Those newsletters always contain a lot of info, which includes announcements of updates to software you might own. Furthermore, if there's a really good freebie out there, they spot it and announce it. You won't regret that subscription.
