using lasso tool and saving cut out image

Postby juanb1203 » Sat Mar 08, 2008 10:08 pm

Hello, I can't figure out how to save the object that I extrat when I use the lasso tool. For instance, let's say I have a picture of boat in the water, and cut out the boat using the lasso tool, how do I save just the picture of the cut out boat?

Thank you

Juan :?

Juan,

Assuming your are using Photoshop, after creating your ‘cut-out’:-

Choose Layer > New, and choose one of the following commands from the submenu:

Layer Via Copy to copy the selection into a new layer.
Layer Via Cut to cut the selection and paste it into a new layer.

In the Layers Palette, turn off the ‘eye’ for the background copy, then ‘Save As’
your cut out layer.

Hope this helps.

Sometimes also, if I have a pix that I want to add something to from another pix, I will cut it out and do "copy" and then paste on the other pix. In the same way, you can outline something and then colorize it.

Juan,

You can make your selection and then click control J and your selection will be on a new layer. Look at your layers palette.

saving as jpeg

Postby juanb1203 » Sat Mar 22, 2008 7:24 am

Ok, I learned how to save my cut out after using the lasso tool, but it won't let me save the file as a jpeg, only a PSE file, how can I do this? Using photoshop elements 5.0

Thanks

Juan

Juan,

It will default to PSE but you can choose save as and under the file format drop down list you can choose .JPG. I would think though that you would want to choose .PNG so your transparent areas stay that way. I am not sure what you are doing though. Good Luck!

Hey Colleen

I know about the drop down box, but it only gave me the one choice, PSE file  Not sure why.

Thanks

Juan

Do I take it that it is Photoshop you are using, this should work in CS2 and CS3, probably inearlier versions as well.
If the dropdown says .PSE, is it Elements you are using, if it is not sure if the following will work.

The way I do it in Photoshop CS3 is as follows:
Select the area with the lasso tool.
CTRL+C to copy the area.
Create a new layer, (icon next to the 'dustbin' at the bottom of layers menu) on the layers menu.
CTRL+V to paste the area to the new layer.
Delete the background layer by dragging it to the 'dustbin' in the layers menu.
File > Save as, select where you want to save and the file name. In the dropdown 'Format', select PNG(*.PNG), then click OK.
This saves the file in .PNG format which preserves transparency.

Is this typically the workflow you are using, as it works for me. I had to do it to write the above.

I don't use Photoshop Elements but in Photoshop if the image is not an 8 Bit RGB image it can't be saved as a JPEG. Could your image possibly be a 16 Bit image?

another problem

Postby juanb1203 » Sat Mar 22, 2008 7:39 pm

Well now I have another problem, my whole thing is that I want to save my cut outs as single files, but after I save them, and open them, they still have backgrounds attacted to them. I'm probably not explaining this right. But lets say for example I use the lasso tool and cut out a car, after I save it, I just want to be able to open it, and see just a car, not a car with a white background behind it. I hope this makes some kinda sense.
