Favourite shots from Saturday....

Postby Tarafrost » Mon Feb 25, 2008 5:01 pm

The "fotography fix" on Saturday was quite successful. I needed that!

I've posted my favourite dozen shots from that afternoon on my Tarafrost Photography Blog in case anyone is interested in seeing what I managed to capture.

For those that are interested in such things, all the shots were taken with my Nikon D200, ISO 200, with my 70-200 AFS VR f2.8 lens.

Enjoy!

Absolutely great shots.

Was surprised by the red eye in a cat.

Usually, when shooting with flash, the cubs end up with "blue-eye", or "green-eye", but this is the first time I've seen red and purple together.

In fact, the close-up of the white tiger cub just before the "alien" shot had "blue-eye" which I fixed, since it looks a bit unworldly, but I liked the two-colour approach. Must have been the angle I shot it at.

Zulu is a great looking lion. Somehow I think he knows it too.

Most of the big cats, being apex predators, seem to have that kind of "catitude".

But he is magnificent, isn't he?

Jazzie and Tsunami peeking out of their "den" struck me beyond all the other photos. I'd love to see this one bigger and without all the compression I'm sure you had to use to get it up there on your site. Bet the contrast is way better in the original, right?

It's unlikely that I'm alone in envying your access to these creatures. The last such place in my area had to shut down about five years ago because of lack of funds. They collected unwanted, maltreated wild animals, perhaps my favorite of them being Benny, the mountain lion with a limp. Next to him was Sarge, the tiger cub who roamed free and enjoyed scaring the wits out of the other animals. When he got a little older, he lost his privileges.

Hi there

Thanks for posting the fabulous shots... as a catlover, I felt I wanted to reach out and touch them. Have seen pictures and video footage of Ligers and Tigons before, but the images of the Jaglions were a revelation to me - beautiful. Made my day.

Brilliant, thanks again for sharing

Yup...the smaller version does lose a fair bit of detail and such. Plus I don't take much time in processing pics for the web, as I would for a full sized print, where I really focus on getting the max out of the image.

Sounds like it was a wonderful place. BCEWS has some animals with disabilities, like Benny. They tug at the heartstrings. Real shame that the place in your area had to shut down. BCEWS is always struggling to stay ahead of the government regulations, dodge the idiots from PETA and the like (they are prohibited from entering the premises, by trespass law) and most urgently, staying ahead of the costs to keep the place open, which are substantial. Vaccinations for all the animals, on an annual basis, are over $5000 alone. Fund-raising is always a big concern.
