I'm impressed by this guy's photography

Postby pwholmes » Wed Jan 23, 2008 11:16 am

I posted this as a comment in another section of the forum but I thought I'd formally add a post about Bill Cawley.

As I try to learn better editing skills with my photos, taking courses on Lynda.com, browsing the web and looking at other photographer's work, I occasionally come across a site that really leaps out at me

Bill Cawley's work stands out in it's warmth and humanity. I love his photos. Maybe you will too.

Great site Paul - well worth a viewing. I'm sure the invitation in the first paragraph of his site had no influence on Jan's views :)

Amen to that.. Yup this guy has a lot of equipment and a even better he has a great eye to see the shot. No wonder his work is so good.

I see he switched from nikon to canon cameras, you should check out all his gear he uses

Ted, we'll have to let Jan answer for herself on that one! :)

As for as camera's go, Rick, several years ago I was checking out the different sites profiling the consumer cameras, like Steve's Digicams. After looking at full-resolution photos of the different cameras I became convinced that Canon had the best color balance. Also, my brother bought a Nikon DSLR and was not happy with the raw files it produced. That said I have seen lots of beautiful photographs produced by Nikons and I'm sure it's just a matter of knowing what you're doing with the raw file, settings, etc. And my sense of color may not be exactly someone elses. But I do like Canons.

I wrote Bill Cawley an email telling him how much I liked his work and he replied with a thank-you email and referred me to a site called

http://radiantvista.com/.

This is another interesting site where a professional photographers take photos sent to them and then do a critique, usually very kindly, and then show where the photo might possibly be improved through cropping, editing, or maybe even by having taken the shot a little differently. The critiques take you through the nitty-gritty of what f-stops create the sharpest pictures, depth of field, balance between various elements, etc.

Hey Paul,

Thanks so much for the link to radiant vista. Excellent! What a great learning tool. The daily critique section is awesome, really loved the quicktime movie critiques. Helps you understand ways of seeing the shot and even ideas on how to retouch with photoshop. I haven't checked the rest of the site yet but i will, I'm still watching the movie section. WoW.. I registered and I hope I get the courage to submit something to them.
Thanks again

Rick G

Hi everyone

I wanted to let you all know another great site for photographic inspiration. I love the creativity of some of these shots (check out the "Life Bulb" in Top Rated Images)!

Life Bulb was pretty cool, just the kind of thing I'm learning to do with layers and selections in Elements. Checked the site out and it looks interesting enough to bookmark.

I'm amazed by what can be done in Photoshop. I'd like to learn to create some images along the lines of "Life Bulb", things like that which stretch reality. Does anyone know of any more sites that showcase great shots like this?

I guess it's up to me to be the contrarian. Now there's a surprise, eh? ;-)

Very few of Bill's photos did anything for me. I found the composition lacking in most of them, and the execution not quite up to the level of what I would consider "good" wedding photography. The portraits were technically competent, but not much more than that.

But that's just my opinion.

As for the inevitable equipment comparisons, I find that amusing. Most equipment these days, especially at the prosumer/pro levels, far exceeds the ability of the photographer using the gear.

But carry on with your pixel peeping, if it brings you happiness. ;-)

I was keeping silent on this post, but since Andrzej jumped in with his inevitable in-your-face comments, I might as well jump in too with a great big ditto. It was the composition in particular that bothered me, somehow always a little bit off like ham after a week in the fridge. I really think there are far better examples to follow than this person's work.

"In your face"? I was just expressing my opinion, which is like sphincters....everyone has one. ;-)

Regardless, I'm officially designating BarbaraC as a "Curmudgeon in Training".
