Photo reflector

Postby tjdowning » Tue Jun 07, 2011 3:36 am

On a whim just got a 43" multi-disc photo reflector. Taking a lot of pics of my new granddaughter and thought this sounded interesting. Problem is I know nothing about this.

Do I need to get a stand or can someone else hold this up?

Also, know any links offhand where I can learn about this. Did a search and couldn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks,
Terri

They can be hand held by an assistant or be clamped onto a stand to hold it. Be aware that if you're outside, a wind can easily catch hold of them so secure it well and weigh down the stand else might be better to just have someone hold it.

A search on YouTube for "how to use a reflector" will often provide all sorts of videos. Adorama happens to have a decent one that includes some information on using reflectors here:

Something you might want to consider is purchasing a book like "Lighting Photo Workshop" ( http://www.amazon.com/Lighting-Photo-Wo ... 0470114339 ) - while it only has a few pages on using reflectors like you are discussing, it does give some excellent advice on using them as well as all sorts of other great info on lighting and it is written in a very easy to understand format with lots of example pictures covering all sorts of types of photography. I have found the book ($20) to be very good and definitely worth the cost. I notice Amazon also had a number of books on "photographing children Photo workshop" that looked good (although I don't have that one) you might want to consider. Typically, they are the type you look through and think "hey, that's a great shot - I'll have to try that" - lighting can very easily make or break a great shot.
