PhotoshopCS3 on Win7

Postby JARHTMD » Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:30 pm

I'm planning to buy a new desktop computer. For quite some time I've been running PhotoshopCS3 on a WinXP computer with very limited resources. I'm looking at 8GB RAM, 1.5GB video card, 1.5TB HD, etc . . . as much as I can get w/o completely breaking the bank. I really don't want to upgrade from CS3 unless absolutely necessary. Are there any problems loading & running CS3 on Win7?

From what I've read it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm running, ahem CS2 on WIN7, 64-bit without a hitch.

Unless you have more than two monitors or you play a lot of games a video card with 1.5GB of ram is over kill even for Photoshop. BTW CS3 doesn't make use of the video cards GPU like CS4 and CS5. I would look for a video card in the $100 to $150 range, look at the video card requirements for Photoshop CS5 and make sure that the video card you get supports that so you are future proofed for when you want to move to CS5.

Other things I would suggest are...

Moving to Windows 7 64-bit.
12GB of RAM.
Twice the hard drive space OR
The hard drive with a solid state drive (128GB to 256GB) that you can use to install Windows and major applications on. This will really speed things up.

I run PSE 8 and CS5 on Win 7 64bit with 8GB of ram.

I really use more than 30% of my ram, even with 3, 12MB photos open at once.

I feel that 6GB of ram is enough, but a good video card is a must.
I have a Geforce 9600 with 512MB of video ram.

CS3 will only run in 32bit mode, but much more efficiently in a 64Bit (I proved this to myself after migrating from XP to Win 7 64bit)
