point and shoot

Postby KarenLynn58 » Fri Mar 20, 2009 1:22 pm

I need help buying a good point and shoot camera.
I need something I can throw in my purse and take with me without worrying
about carting my good Canon DSLR around.......
Any suggestions?

Karen,
Lots of things to consider with a point and shoot. How you use it might determine the best camera for you. I have an old Nikon S6 that I stick in my pocket sometimes, but I would really try to find a camera with a viewfinder as well as a LCD (if that creature exists).

You might find the following web site interesting:

Good luck,

I'm using a Canon ELPH.
They just released their new generation.

Whatever you get, I'd recommend one with a viewfinder.
More and more, newer cameras aren't coming with them.
It makes it very difficult framing a shot on the back display in sunlight, since you can't see anything.

Over the last 3 years I've purchased as gifts or recommended 5 iterations of the Canon Axxx Powershot series. Routinely at the top of reviewer's and Consumer's Reports lists--but more importantly (to me!) not one person has failed to like it and use it heavily. One bought it as a backup/pocket camera the others are using it as a primary. Superb human-factors, good camera mechanics and excellent sensor used combine to make a camera that's a real winner for a huge number of folks. The last one I bought was a Canon A590is for my son a few months ago. There are more compact ones out there if that's an issue but I, personally, don't believe there's a better one for the dollars spent.

I agree with Dick. I own 2 Canon DSLR's & just bought a Canon A590is ($110) for much the same reason that you're considering a P&S. It has a viewfinder (altho' it doesn't duplicate the display view). I also bought a display shade (from Walmart) for only $5, which should help when shooting in bright sunlight. Another positive for me is that it is powered by 2 AA batteries. In an emergency, replacement batteries should be easy to find. On my last outing I took only the A590 (to force me to learn) . . . after a couple of hours, my back was killing me . . . shooting "at arm's length" is "different".

I have an old Canon A95 I keep in my purse. It uses 4 AA batteries. It still works and keeps a charge pretty well. My sister bought a Canon point and shoot a couple of years ago in the 500 or 600 series, I can't remember which. But it only used 2 AA batteries. For some reason it ate up batteries like crazy and she hated that. Mine does not. I would hate it too if that happened. My first digital camera I bought in 1996 went through batteries like crazy too - terribly annoying.

She and I both like the swivel LCD feature which doesn't come on many of the Canon's anymore. I think now they only put it on the SX1 IS and the SX10 IS. But they use 4 AA batteries. I kind of figure that must be better than only using 2 batteries. She just bought the SX10 IS. I don't know how she likes it but I think if I were to have to replace my old P&S, I might choose the SX 1 IS model for the swivel LCD and RAW capability.

I haven't read any reviews on that newest model though and it's not going to be released until next month (April 2009).

I imagine it's not that compact compared to the Elph or A series cameras.

Along these lines, I have a small Canon Powershot that I tuck into my bag when I want to carry a small camera.
Recently, I came across a very convenient protection for it.

I have no connection to this company - but think the product is great for the way I carry the camera.

Thanks everybody for you replies.
I am now on a mission to find the prefect point and shoot!! LOL!!
I am looking at all the ones mentioned and also reading reviews...
It can be so confusing....
I have owned some small point and shoot cameras in the past that I hated and ending
up selling.....I don't want to end up with another one that I won't use.....
You guys are always so great ....and always such great help!!
Thanks!

I have a canon ixus 960is - it is compact, takes great pictures, has a view finder, lithium battery (which lasts for ages) and tv output.

Hi Karen,
For Christmas my hubby bought me a Nikon CoolPix S550. A compact point and shoot with some nice features.
