Now my information is from my D300 manual, but I am thinking it should be close to the same. You will need Nikon transfer program, should of come with the camera, or Camera Control software. My D300 came with a USB cable to connect the camera to a PC. You will need to turn on the MTP/PTP Mass storage option in the camera setup menu ( the wrench). I found this information in the Connecting to a Computer section of the camera manual. Turn on computer and connect USB to PC and camera. Turn on camera, if connected correctly you should see PC in the top view window. The software should then take over and guide you. As I mentioned above this was from my D300 manual, so take a look in your manual for any differences. I hope this helps...

I've never plugged ANY of my cameras into my computer. I just take the card out and put it in the card reader. Once you do that, the card is seen as just another drive on the computer. No software needed. Just copy the files from the card to the computer. If you want to plug it in then Scott has better info than I.

Buy a card reader & let Windows take care of the rest.

Seeing that you have Nikon's, I would recommend using Nikon's "Camera Control Pro 2" Software

A trial download is available from here http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61#Anchor-3

The manual is available here http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/software/ccp_2en.pdf

And just as an FYI here is Nikons main dowload page http://www.nikonusa.com/Service-And-Support/Download-Center.page

I do as Rick and have a card reader. I think it was $15 and it has 6 different slots for different kinds of cards. Sometimes when I am doing a show for someone I will just take thier card and download them (without deleting from camera) as you wouldn't believe how many people just leave all their pix on their cards. I have a friend who just buys new cards when they fill up!

It is very easy, takes far less time than hooking the camera up to the computer.

Another vote for a card reader. Have not experimented with that Nikon software in particular, but there have been many instances of the "quickie camera software" screwing up other applications (and things to do with video seem to be common targets). I try to avoid just installing stuff on my system unless I really want it.

You can't have too many gadgets or too much disk space !!

Lots of PIC and Arduino microprocessor stuff too !!

I too vote for card reader - if you have enternal space , go for it...there inexpensive, fairly easy to install & one less external usb to deal with

There are three different software that I am aware of.
http://www.breezesys.com/NKRemote/index.htm for $95.00.
http://www.oxfordeye.co.uk/Author.aspx which is around $49.95 but you can get it for around $35.00 0n ebay.
There is Nikon's own software which is around $180.00.
And the last one which I can not remember the web address but it is free. I will look for the address if you are interested in it.

hi
if you go for software instead of a carder reader(internal or external) -Please do not buy any - I have a few original software not used, nikon capture is one of them - i would be more than happy to snail mail it to you if interested - Its sitting in a case since I purchase my d80 not being used - I owe a pay it forward and this would count - pm me if interested

Just reading through the new posts and wanted to say kudos on the pay it forward, Ron. (Don't need it anything, just thought it was extremely nice of you)

Another for card readers. I use a SanDisk Image Mate. Never had a problem and inexpensive!

Another reason to use a card reader is you save the power in your camera battery.
Sometimes that saved power is just enough to get that final picture you want so bad
especially if you don't have a back-up power supply and you are not able to charge your battery.
I've been know to empty my pictures into my laptop when on vacation so I can have
a empty disk in the camera. Just a thought!

Yes I have a Nikon 40X also.
