Nikon D90

Postby Alan » Thu Dec 25, 2008 12:22 pm

In the market for a new DSLR? Have a look at the Nikon D90. Had mine for a couple of weeks and I am so impressed. I've upgraded from a Nikon D70 and the difference is staggering. A great camera. The first DSLR with HD video capabilities - albeit with some limitations. The video wasn't a consideration but a handy addition to the specs.

Hello:
Very nice camera. I use Nikon equipment and you really can not go wrong with either Nikon or Canon. It really ends up how the one taking the pictures handles the camera. A dollar two ninety eight camera will take good pictures but the one pushing the button is the one that does the photography. I took a picture the other day in church at a Christmas program and did not have my camera ready when this young lady came down the aisle from behind and the spot light hit her in its glow. I had my point and shoot Canon camera with me and grabbed it quickly and I'll be darn, one of the best photo's I took the whole evening. You take lots of pictures and let's us Enthusiasts see your latest work in the near future!

Alan - Just bought the D90 today. Selling my trusty D40 as I will keep my D80 for backup. So far the images are razor sharp as it uses the same sensor as the $3000 D300. ~will post a show very soon with images from it. ~Al

Hi Al......I'm absolutely delighted with my D90. All images so far tack sharp. Did you get the kit lens? At a party over the Christmas holiday I was asked to take a shot of about 25 people indoors. Thankfully I had my SB600. Made a very good picture. Quite frankly I don't think I could have got such a good result with my D70 and the kit lens I had with that.

Happy days

Alan, I debated about the kit lens but decided to go for it because it is a VR lens. My current 18-135 is not VR so I will most likely sell that lens as well. I have a 70-300VR and used with the D90 is staggering! Let's each do a show featuring shots from the D90 and make everyone jealous! Al

I'm already jealous without seeing a show. Congratulations to both of you!

Al, how do you go about selling your old equipment?

Kathy, Mostly word of mouth. People who know me know that I treasure my equipment and keep it pristine. I save all original boxes and packing materials. I have two gentlemen interested already. Sometimes (rarely) I will use Ebay, but most of the time folks jump on my gently used equipment. Blessings, ~Al

PS. The D40 (which currently sells for $499.99) is $300 and my 18-135 lens which sells for $249.00 is $100.00. I am also thinking of parting with my 55-200 for $150.00.

Good prices considering what each cost 12-18 months ago. I guess the lenses that work on the D40 will not work on the D90?

Replaced my D40 recently with a D90. Didn't buy the kit lens as I prefer my 18 - 200 VR. Sadly not had much opportunity to play with the D90 properly yet.

I have the D80 and there is not enough difference between those two to justify buying a new camera. I'd love to have the video as I do shoot video and then I'd have one less piece to carry but it's still twice the cost as an HD camcorder with less features. The only thing that truly pushes it over the edge is the DOF and choices of lens. Right now I'm sitting with my SD camcorder and evaluating the HD video options. If I find that most of what I want in video are tight closeup shots then the D90 is the way to go. I say that because of the DOF AND the fact that it only shoots with the lens you have on it! So most of the time that's a 28-75. The camcorders on the other hand give you 35 - 400mm on demand AND Optical Stabilization (I don't own a VR lens) minus the DOF plus continous auto focus, stereo sound etc.
