This is a really basic question. You'll probably want to get a book on how to use photoshop effectively ... try "Classroom in a Book" series. A lot of handy material to get you where you need to go. ... and a lot faster than you'll get there by asking questions on how to use PS here.

Creating a mask in photoshop is simply a matter of clicking on the quickmask icon in your layers window. Or creating a layer mask on your image (and painting them with your brush ... ) . . . . That's the simple and quick answer. ... and you'll have your mask.

In PSP, clicking on the "make it a mask" button will transform the given layer into a mask...

Are you creating an image to use as a mask in PSP?

A black square on a transparent background can be used as a mask and is really easy to create in PS. Or, in PSP, you can create effectively the same thing by creating a solid color or gradient layer and resizing as appropriate ... then clicking on the mask button (and choosing grayscale of alpha).

You need to get a handle on the basics of masks to make effective use of them. That goes for PS or PSP. . . .

Good Luck
