Producer 5 - 3-D caption fun

Postby BarbaraC » Sat Jan 21, 2012 11:50 am

When we have new toys, all we want to do is play with them, and so I thought you might enjoy creating some 3-D captions using the shiny new Tilt toy.

1. Choosing a blocky font, type your caption in white on a black background.
2. Right-click the preview screen, and capture the frame, saving it, of course, to a place where you can find it (as opposed to what I sometimes do).
3. Add a Color Solid or Gradient to a blank slide.
4. Add the saved caption image to the slide.
5. Turn the caption (layer 1) into a mask.
6. Apply Tilt to the mask.

Experiment by moving the rotation point to the beginning of the caption, to the end, to the top, to the bottom. Add a second caption/color masking set and have dueling captions. Change the colors as the tilt progresses. Play!

Here's a snapshot of a caption quickly done. You can do better.

Forrest, you're entirely welcome. I started playing, but it was lonely, so I invited in a few friends.

HI there,

Liked the Title effect. At 2 to find Capture frame you have to be in Design Mode. Could not find how to turn layer into a mask - button stayed grey. However could twist the title to get your effect.

Thanks for sharing - Cheers, Derek

Derek, I did all of it in Effects. I'm not sure what happened that you had to be in Design.

Hi Barbara,
We'll try it soon. The keyframes first and the caption later. Thanks. quetzal :)

Hi again Barbara,
We're just trying the caption. Apply a gradient. It's fun as you said. And we added the modifier cosinus function
to the mask. All the gradient background flashed and the caption stayed in colours. Very interesting. quetzal :)

Some of the best things happen when all we're doing is playing.

Hi... I am trying to do the tilted caption as you explained, but I am very confused. When you save "save" save is as what? I am totally blanking out on this. Thank you.

Sandy, are you right-clicking the main preview screen? Not in the Options screen? The large screen is where you should be. When you right-click, you'll see on the little menu the choice to Capture Frame(s). Choose that, and then simply tell it in the resulting dialog box where you want to save it. You can also rename it there. Click OK, and you've got what you need. Saving as the default JPG is just fine.

Think nothing of it. I just spent an hour trying to do something unrelated to ProShow, and absolutely nothing worked. I finally grabbed my son, who took one look at the screen, and asked if I'd picked the right item from the drop-down box. "What drop-down box?" He clicked with the mouse and said, "This one right here." A full hour spent trying to do something to the wrong item because I'd missed the stupid drop-down staring me in the face!

Thanks Barbara,

That's pretty neat. Thanks. I learned two things, your 3D caption tilt and capture frame. Is capture frame new in 5? I hadn't noticed it before.

Dina, it's actually been there all along, but you aren't likely to notice it easily.

Something many of us suggest periodically: Right-click absolutely everything. You never know what you'll find. :D

Hey Barbara: I gave up trying to do the 3d caption back when I tried it in Feb. A month later, I decided to try again. Yay! I did it. Thanks, it's awesome.
