i had an idea.........

Postby shazmark » Sat Aug 30, 2008 2:30 pm

hi everyone,
I had an idea for slide in my show,
i sat up last nite till late and wasted a heap of time, and finally retrteated to bed in disgust with myself,
now tell me if I am stupid, but this was my idea:
I had a juice drop and pulled a christmas tree from it,
I then saved it as a png in photoshop
then i placed it in my slide
and then proceeded to choose on of my mde's
put it in juicer and made it 2 files .mov and alpha.mov
and then put them in my show
alpha first ticked as a mask depth of 1
than .mov video file second
then christmas tree png
thinking that this will give me an effect of twinkling lights on a tree.
But oh no, nothing runs as it should!!!! agghhhhhhhh
the mde's werent transparent as i would have thought they would be and i had a black square over top of my christmas tree png.
so anyone got any ideas on what i was doing wrong, or am i a fool and dont know what i am doing,
allso can producer convert my ideas into backgrounds if they work that is LOL
because i would like to try and create my own .mov backgrounds as well as i am having a heck of a lot of trouble with ones I purchase stuttering in the final creation of my dvd on the t.v.
anyway hope this all makes sense
prob too crazy for anyone to answer
cheers
a frustrated

What the heck is an MDE?!

What files were you using from DJ for your "MDE?" Maybe I have it and can take a look and see if I can somewhat duplicate your experiment.

An animation (i.e., video file) can't be used as a background (i.e., the slideshow background or slide background) EXCEPT as the last LAYER of a slide. Using a video file as a background layer is memory and disk space intensive after awhile...use with discretion!

Shazmark,

Your idea of a mask on top of a .mov on top of third layer can work if executed properly. Three values make a mask work. Black, white and transparency.

Your lack of transparency in the mask could be the culprit. You may need to create a better mask with appropriate tones.

Since black has an opposite function from grayscale to alpha masks you might first try re-defining your mask as the other type.

Without being able to see your mask I really can't know the solution but there is one if you persevere.

I know you said you did all this already but this actually worked so maybe there is one little step missing that you might see from this. See if it helps and if not let me know and I will guide you as best that I can! Hugs Jan

ps great idea....

Well, now that I know what a motion design element is I can relate to an MDE! I just never used that acronym!

There's really no problem ... or shouldn't be. The alpha channel mov should be selected as a grayscale mask (not ALPHA). That's because ANY color in a PSP alpha channel mask is ON (anything under the mask is visible and anything outside the limits of the mask is cut off) or OFF (what was visible is hidden and what was hidden is visible). That won't work for a video alpha mask ... has to be an Intensity (grayscale) mask to work correctly (that is, the hide what needs hidden and to keep visible what needs to be seen!). That means that what is black in the mask layer hides the corresponding area in the masked layer while the white portion is kept visible. All areas that are a shade of gray between black and white will have a corresponding effect upon the transparency or opaqueness of the masked layer.

So ALPHA MOV (layer 1) : set to intensity (grayscale) mask, depth of 1
Video MOV (layer 2, the color layer): this becomes the masked layer.
Layer 3 is the stuff you added and which should be seen through parts of the above mask set.

I didn't Shaz, I just took your idea and recreated with what I had  They are not actually lights, it is 0258 on the MDE Vol 015, Grab bag Vol 3. I think it is actually numbers and squares  However when shrunk it's hard to tell. Cheers Jan

I just looked at the blinkers disc. What if you tried using number 042 and slowed the speed down? I redid this and slowed the speed down 10 and added another set of the same MDE to cover the whole tree. See what you think. Cheers Jan
