Video splitter

Postby bonalymac » Fri Dec 02, 2011 3:00 am

Anyone got any reccomnendations for a simple mpeg splitter.

I know I can trim in Producer, or in Premiere elements etc, but I'm looking for a simple utility which only does the basics. If all I want is 10 secs out of a 1Gb file, I'd like an easy way to get at it, and then work with a much smaller file inside Producer or Elements etc.

There are hundreds if not more on Google, so I was looking for a reccomendation, rather than just randomly picking one which can be a bit iffy.

Quite happy to pay, as long as it is just a splitter (and maybe joiner as well), but I don't want to pay for a bloated all purpose video product. Of course free is even better!

Hi Colin,

I don't think that "splitter" is the correct term for what you are looking for. Programs that are defined as "video splitters", usually can split in half, or in chunks of a certain amount.
What you are looking for is a normal video editor.

The best (and famous) free one is VirtualDub which is an Open Source video editor released under the GNU.
This is the homepage: http://www.virtualdub.org/index.html
There are plenty of tutorials on the web on how to use it, and you can do lots and lots of things with it.

Hi Mona

Hopefully, I specifically don't want a video editor. I have one I'm happy with - Premiere Elements. But working inside one of this means usually means processing the files again. While I'm sure others may be faster than PE, its still an issue.

I filmed a school show the other night and have in total almost 40Gb of data from the various rehersals etc.

I want a splitter which lets me take chunks out here and there. I know the time segments I want. I'd even accept fixed chunks, as the result is easier to work with than individual files each of 2Gb.

However, I've had a quick look at the virtualdub web site, and it does say
Remove segments of a video clip and save the rest, without recompressing

So I'll have a play with it and let you know the outcome

You'll find that Virtualdub isn't anything like Elements or similar editors, but for editing mpeg you'll need VirtualdubMod or the plugin at http://home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plu ... index.html

http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/2340 ... tualDubMod

They are both very good editors but there's a bit of a learning curve - when isn't there.

If you were prepared to pay ($99) the mpeg editor I would recommend is MPEG Video Wizard DVD http://www.womble.com/products/index.html.

It's an excellent and very useful tool for editing mpeg and other formats. Among other things it's great for top & tailing and removing ads from TV recordings and making them into DVDs.

It's cut-down version ($19) is Womble MPEG-VCR http://www.womble.com/purchase/vcr.html the forerunner to the Wizard. It's interface is dated but it does an equal job in terms of MPEG editing.

Both progs have free trials to download.
