What is a good application to edit video clips as well as compress video?

I use the free virtua dub to edit and de-shake video, although ive often used other software such as the nero vision stuff ( that came with my copy of nero burning rom) and windows movie maker ( which is a free download for windows P.Cs
The one feature that i mainly use virtua dub for is the DE-shaker add on ( again its free :) )

Its not the most elegant way of doing things, however as i don't work with video in a professional way, and what for what little video stuff i do handle it suits my needs, both practically and financially.

WOW! I'm impressed with the "de-shake" function of Virtual Dub. I've had the program but never really got around to exploring it much. Thanks.
