For all you Adobe lovers (me included), Adobe will soon announce an upgrade from CS4 to CS5. Seems like only yesterday I was playing around with Photoshop 6! This will be version 12!!!!

Now that I've spent the money to build a machine that will run CS5, I don't have the money to get CS5

Also . . . . .

64 bit only. So you need to have the power and OS to run CS5. If you have <= 4GB of RAM it's a waste of time and money too. You have to have 6GB to 8GB minimum to do you any good.

And I'm finding out that the plugins that worked for 32 bit Photoshop do not work in 64 bit Photoshop. You can install them and PS won't complain at all. They just won't show up. Not even greyed out. Personally, the plugins are more important to me right now than the speed increase (about 10%-15%), so I'm going back to the 32 bit app. If and when the plugin mfrs get caught up to 64 bit mode then I would maybe consider CS5.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Most of the important plug-ins either do work in 64-bit or will when the next versions ship. Nik is in the process of doing that. Viveza 2 which is the best image adjust plug-in around is 64-bit now. OnOne's Plug-ins are 64-bit. Topaz Labs have been 64-bit for sometime. Alien Skin is slowly updating there that will work in 64-bit. Eye-Candy 6 does and with Exposure 3 going in to beta in less than a week and it will be 64-bit.

The only ones you really have to worry about are the freeware, shareware things and a couple of fringe companies that are just milking so-so plug-ins for all they can get. Those may or may not get updated to 64-bit.

CS4 was a crossroads product. You could run it 32 or 64 bit. 32 bit is now legacy. Most laptops are shipped with Win 7 64 bit. Having 4 gig is now a basic necessity. I'm afraid it is the nature of the beast.

Yes, I remember 6 too. To tell the truth I think I remember when it was just "photoshop" :D

I am still running CS2. Wonder how much the student upgrade would be? I need to check.

Hey Joe
I'm in that same boat ... just built me a beauty ... and my wallet felt it ... I even went and bought a new toy with it ... Autodesk 3ds Max 2010 (Actually bought it for my son & I see what he does with it & I want to learn so badly ... So it'll be quite some time before I'm running CS5 ... but as they say "You just never Know"

Adobe recently gave me permission to say that I'm a beta tester for CS5 and that I can post photos comparing CS4 and CS5 as long as I don't reveal anything about specific features I used for the photographs. I've got to say that the new release is really going to be amazing. I hand held my camera for this scene and took a variety of exposures and used the same unnamed process. Maybe not the best photograph (although I really thought this storefront was amazing), but I thought you might enjoy seeing the difference.

That's impressive Frankie! Between this feature and the smart fill feature, it looks like Photoshop is revolutionizing something it has already revolutionized! I can't wait to get it! Sounds like it will ship in the May to June timeframe.

My only concern is that some reports indicate it is 64 bit only while others seem to indicate it will still run 32 bit. I am running XP Pro (32bit) and to go to 64 bit would require new OS, new motherboard and other $$ that I have not convinced my wife (or myself for that matter) is worth it. The new features do look good though !!

Lots of PIC and Arduino microprocessor stuff too !!

It really is going to be a nice upgrade to have. The most impressive things about it for me are the time-saving elements. I'm looking forward to the release.
