That is sort of like asking "what car do you drive" -- there are many
possibilities here - most scanners come with some sort of software
that actually isn't too bad (my epson was OK). Many editors like
Photoshop and most of the others support input from scanners directly.
This is assuming you are scanning prints -- then of course there are
film scanners if you are scanning old slides or negatives etc that
range over the full range of $$$. Many of us, for our current stuff
have simply sidestepped the question -- we are shooting digital :D

You might want to check out Scantips at http://www.scantips.com/
and Hamricks scanning software "Vuescan" at http://www.hamrick.com/
for some ideas. If you define what you are trying to do and what
you will be working with, people here can come up with some
more relevant comments, but it is tough since it is such a broad
topic when you start looking into it.

Well, for myself, I have been shooting digital for about 6 years now so that
covers the current pictures. I did buy an Epson 2480 Photo scanner a while
back that came with a automatic feeder - I can put in 20 or so 4 * 6 prints
at a time and let it scan them for me (which I intend to do with a bunch of
stuff in the near future). You can go the full range -- you can easily spend
a hour on a slide scan and end up with a 50 meg file ... for 1 slide. For
me personally, I would just like to get all my boxes of prints scanned into
500k - 2 meg files each - somewhere in that range would be great for my
uses. I guess wait and see what other people have to say for their needs.

I am using a HP scanjet 4890 scanner, but I scan into Adobe elements 5. Like most who use PSG, I shoot digitally (Nikon D80), and only use the scanner for old stock photos. I also need to get all my old stuff digitized .... after all these years my pics are starting to fade, but then so am I.
