Creating Disc With 3rd Party Software

Postby Bill McMahon » Thu Jan 15, 2009 10:37 am

This issue may have already been addressed but I can't remember, does anyone use Nero to burn the ISO image to DVD? I see many references to using ImgBurn software and was wondering if there is any advantage to using ImgBurn?

Hi
I believe Nero isn't free - that I believe is the main difference.

Hi Bill,

Most of the disk burning apps (Nero, Roxio, Ashampoo, Imgburn + many others) are able to burn an ISO. It probably all comes down to whatever your preferences are.

As Ron has mentioned, Imgburn is free. A number of members aren't that keen on Nero & Roxio as they tend to want to install a heap of unwanted #$%^ on your PC & can be difficult to remove.

I use Ashampoo for most of my burning needs. Here's a recent thread on burning apps http://www.proshowenthusiasts.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=9761&p=79708#p79708.

I use Imgburn - works like a charm to burn my ISO files and it's free. It was easy to figure out the first time I used it and I've never had any trouble with it.

I used to use Roxio. But that program takes up a lot of HD space as it has a lot of content and the version I had was not user friendly. Also sort of dicey/problematic if you try to remove some elements of the program so I didn't bother loading it on my new computer and am sticking with Imgburn which is very straightforward to use IMO.

Thanks for the link. It looks like a good program and legit but I'm curious - why do companies like this offer these programs as free downloads? What's the advantage to them?

I don't quite know in this case. Some companies offer more extensive versions of a program at a cost and will entice you with a version that is limited in functionality for free.

This is not a rip off of a regular program that costs money and put up on those questionable websites, but is indeed free.

Imgburn for example is written by the guy who wrote "DVD decryptor" (or something like that) a while back that would decrypt the commercial dvd's so you could save a copy etc (very important if you have small kids with grubby paws who always want to see the same show -- been there done that). Some people just really enjoy creating things like that (fortunately for the rest of us). Look at all the cool utilities and apps out there in the Linux side of the world that are free (under the GPL). Some people enjoy helping people in forums, some people write cool utilities etc. Look at Gimp or Audacity for example. For Photoshop users, check out the free "Contact Sheet X" contact sheet utility for Photoshop ( http://ps-scripts.sourceforge.net/Conta ... X/csx.html ). PanosFX has a number of cool actions that are free - true, he has pay stuff too, but his free stuff is just that - free. You may find the following interesting reading:

Speaking of FREE things that do work..for me.
If you don't like the high price of Microsoft Office, then try this free one.
It does everything I need and reads all of of the Microsoft documents that
I've tried to open so far. Why is it free? Someone got tired of the high price
of office I was told. And its open source and has quite a few templates available.

Mikey, I looked at the Contact Sheet X but couldn't figure out its purpose. I have Photoshop CS3. What would I use this for?

Thanks, Frankie

I assume that CS3 is like CS2 mostly (which is what I have). Under CS2, down under "File -> Automation" you will find "Contact Sheet II" for making contact sheets from the selected series of pictures (works quite well actually - resizes all the images and places them on individual layers in a nice contact sheet). "Contact Sheet X" was described by some people in the Photoshop forums (I think that was where I found it) as sort of a "Contact Sheet II" on steroids. A bunch more features and options for creating those contact sheets. Pretty handy feature if you have not had a chance to try it out. I have not had a chance to try it out yet (soon). I assume it is written in JavaScript like many of those things are - I did like the looks of the interface though.
