show intended for DVD then since it can be anywhere from 10% to 0 overscan.
Wonderful. Sounds like the rest of my computer life.
Nothing ever works everywhere...
And here I thought you didn't understand !
Especially with the older CRT's, they had significant overscan to cover the
scan non-linearity at the ends of the scan lines. Remember the old TV's
that had size adjustments and vertical/horizontal hold controls ?? (wow, that
dates me - I still remember black and white). Try turning the vertical and
horizontal size down so you see the whole picture -- look at the "page peel"
effect along the edges of the picture (very typical). That is what makes it so
hard. LCD gets even more interesting - by itself, it has no "overscan", however,
during the A/D conversion of a TV signal, they may introduce some "overscan"
by just trimming the ends a bit. Then you take the same display and
feed it a digital signal from the computer and if it is 1200 pixels wide, you
can use 1200 pixels - none of this overscan nonsense. There is no clearly
defined amount of overscan - as you have discovered, it can vary.
(look at the hassles with the different media types for DVD's )

You can't have too many gadgets or too much disk space !!

Lots of PIC and Arduino microprocessor stuff too !!

Sounds like you're advocating putting the show INSIDE the Safe zone, maybe just a touch over vs. going edge to edge and just keeping the titles in the safe zone?
Rick Insane Diego...
Kay, I'd prefer my "aha" moments weren't followed by hours of revision.
Dale, it's only 20-20 when you can find your glasses. Mine have a wanderlust. I need a little beeper for them so I can press a button and they honk from wherever they are. It would probably scare the dickens out of anyone who happens to be sitting near them. Like the day I was next to a car that someone was trying to find, and the car beeped and I nearly lost my teeth.

cut off on top all the time!
Hi All,
Glad to see this post because I was wondering about my own shows. I am not convinced that my proshow software is set up properly because no matter what tv I viewed my shows on, the top gets cut off even if its in the safe zone. I asked about this at the Chicago conference but they couldnt make a determination as to why that might happen. Now I just move all my captions to the bottom or sides and dont use the top for anything too important. I do hate though that I have to be so cautious. I do my shows in 4:3 to this point and have tried different shows on different tvs with the same result.

Barb, if you turn on composition lines while editing you should be able to see the safe zone even if the slide background is black. The composition lines will fade when they cross the save zone. You can define the grid as well for color and number of lines. I use this a lot and it has saved me time.
