Flight to New York

Postby dnavarrojr » Thu Mar 29, 2007 11:49 pm

First, here's the sample:

http://www.jancraft.org/dave/psp/nyflight-psp.html

If the music drives you nuts, just mute it. :)

I got the original for the map from this location:

http://www.primap.com/en/html/maps.html

and cropped it to what I needed:

http://www.jancraft.org/dave/psp/usa_map_02_lg_pan.jpg

The plane is an object from Cool3D. I rotated it to the correct angle for my flight from California to New York, gave it a green background and exported to a bitmap. I imported the bitmap into Paint Shop Pro, cut out the green to give it a transparent background, and then created the shadow on a seperate layer. I resized the shadow and moved it into position and exported the whole thing as a PNG file:

http://www.jancraft.org/dave/psp/3d_plane.png

In PSP, I dropped the map into the primary layer and zoomed in to 300%. I positioned the first frame to show my starting point and the final frame to show my ending point.

I added the plane as a new layer and then went to the motion tab and added 3 keyframes. For the first keyframe I positioned the plane pretty much over LA and resized it to about 6%. For the second keyframe I moved it to where I wanted it to be for the middle part of the flight and resized it to 50%. For the third keyframe I left it in position and at 50%. For the 4th keyframe I moved it over NYC and resized it to 8% again.

Voila! You have a plane flying from California to New York.

ps. Here's a more fun version of the map:

You did a fantastic job! Thank you for sharing the show, and thank you so much for sharing info on how to duplicate it. Now, I just need to put in the leg-work to figure it out. Looks good. Many uses.

I have cool 3D v3.5 and couldn't find the plane object.
I looked in the "studio" category.
Could you please tell me what version you 're refering to and in which category you found it ?
Thanks. :)

Hi Dom,
I have Cool 3D 3.5 and Cool 3D Production Studio as well. I don't see that plane at all. There is an older type of plane but not a jet. Is there a place to get more objects. you think? hugs Jan

It's a DirectX file in the ".x" samples that come with Cool 3D 3.5 called "airplane.x"

You have to import it using the "Import X Model" option in the file menu. When you do, make sure you select the "D3D data type" option in the import dialog so that you get the texture. Otherwise you'll just get the mesh.

In Cool3D, I tried to change the color of the background but couldn't find how to make it.
Could you tell me how to proceed ?
Thanks.

In the "EasyPalette", click the + next to Studio and select backgrounds. Down at the bottom of the dialog is a tiny black square with "Color" over it. Click in the black square to get the color dialog.

VERY awesome! I didn't even consider adding clouds. And that mask to simulate a round earth was also too awesome.

I zipped up all of the files for this project and uploaded them to my web site. I'm not sure if it's worth making a template or even how to make one, so I thought I'd just zip everything up. :)
