Still image appears to have movement / 3D

Postby kerdogz » Fri Jan 14, 2011 9:45 pm

Hey all,

I'm new to producer and this forum. I've searched everywhere (in this forum and out) looking for tips / tutorial on a specific technique. It's hard to describe, but here goes...

It's the look where a still image appears to have moving elements within it. Sometimes a pan may be involved too. It usually imparts a "3D" look to the effect as well.

From what I've see, I think this can be done with Producer. Perhaps a static background and then .png cut outs from the image in question.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks

kerdogz

You are correct.
You may find some information in these two recent threads:

However, the 3D effect is entirely dependent on what is in your own picture, and how you want to build the viewing angle. Eg: how you want the viewer to start and finish looking at your picture.

Mona,

Thanks for the rapid response. I just watched the first video, (Palwebs) and it's very close to what I want to do.

Thanks again!!

One of the tricks with the "fake 3D" effect like that is to keep the motion fairly small - if you try to do too much, it becomes obvious and detracts from the effect.

Digital Juice has a tutorial dated Jun 1 2007 that demonstrated this effect. They don't use Producer though and have more 3-d tools.

You can either watch the entire thing or just fast forward to 4:50 where it picks up on the specifics of this technique and watch to the end. A photo editor is required to cut out the elements in the scene.

Things at a distance are often darker and shorter, that may help you pull this off. Also take advantage of the blur tool in Producer and place different amounts of blur on your layers with the sharper images to the front.

It's a lot of work if you make as many layers as the DJ demo has.

Here's an old 48 second demo from 2008 that has a bit of a 3-D look effect. Fast forward to 33 seconds into the show to see the example. Don't blink else you'll miss it as that segment with the effect is only about 3 seconds long. It's not much but still fun to throw that effect in a show every once in a while for a surprise.

Doing an OOB (Out of Bounds) picture is another way to do a 3D effect. And it's something that many people haven't seen.

Yes . . . you most certainly can create this sort of effect by using an external photo processing program like Photoshop, Paint.net or the Gimp, etc. You create your cut-out picture elements and save them as PNG files and then reassemble them in Producer to create the 3D illusion of depth and movement. Here are some examples I experimented with:

1. Hope Valley: http://www.photodex.com/share/pilotdan/7kdw8mg4

2. Jumping Off The Edge: http://www.photodex.com/share/pilotdan/xgm26mg4

3. Argosy Arrives Again: http://www.photodex.com/share/pilotdan/98bw8mg4

4. A Perfect Winter: http://www.photodex.com/share/pilotdan/74c89mg4

Hope this helps :-)

Dan,

Those are great examples. The ship didn't look like it was ever going to stop. I thought maybe you'd designed it so it was going to crash through the barrier! LOL

I could just picture adding a grandson to the "off the cliff" with a big splash at the end, but better yet was the last one. Simple exploding transition into a black slide or caption and your audience is going to roar. Great way to spice up those vacation or family videos.

Here was a sample I put together a couple of years ago for my daughters soccer team using the "out of bounds" images. They can add an entirely new element to a show or you could use one for example in your show to "show" a transition from one place to another (skiing into the hot tub after wards  ) Anyway, some ideas - here was my demo of the OOB technique:

The OOB is a great effect and is now included in Photoshop Elements 9. Very easy to accomplish.
