COMIC EFFECT: full pack to apply to your own pics

Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:12 am

I made an action to make a comic effect for your own pictures.

Image

This action is an adaptation of the excellent tutorial avalaible on marmec.com which you can find here.

An action is avalaible but "the effect is slightly different than the one detailed in the written tutorial and had to be dumbed down for automation's sake. But, I think you will agree, it still looks pretty slick. Download it and give it a shot."

That's what I did, I tried it, and honestly, imho, the action is nice but not as nice as the effect you can have following the tutorial. Overall, the user has aboslutely NO CONTROL on the final effect of this action.

So, I wrote my own action set and here is the result.

Image Image

I added several improvements, and in particular an action to make your own bubbles.

So here are the steps with the action implied :

- "Comic Effect" Action, "White Areas" Action, "Colorized Areas" Action, "Add Ballons" Action, "Dot Screen Effect" Action, "GreyScale" Action, "ADD WhiteFrame" Action

(Since I made those samples, I improved the action. Colors are more saturated for a better Comic Effect).

For the balloons, I used several fonts (avalaible on dafont.com) :
I included in the pack three kinds of balloons :

- "Regular" Balloons
Image

- "Sound FX" Balloons
Image

- "Say" Balloons
Image

IMPORTANT : before using the "Balloons" actions :
- for the text to include in the balloons in the "Balloons" actions, I use Anime Ace Font.
Download this font here and install the .ttf files in C:/Windows/Fonts.
- unzip the "balloons" included in the archive in a folder on your PC.
- within Photoshop, load the action (it's very simple but in case you don't know how, here is a tutorial).

You don't have to add the balloons and the text within Photoshop.
You can do it directly in Proshow :
- a layer for the image itself
- layers for the balloons
- captions for the texts.

Download my full "COMIC EFFECT" pack (including photoshop action set and "balloon" masks) :

I really made an effort and imho, the action is well documented.
You just have to follow the instructions provided by the action.

If you can have a look, I would really appreciate your opinion. B)

Hope you will enjoy it. :)

I tried it but it didn't seem to work. I have Photoshop 6. Perhaps I need a later version.

Hi Pat,

Thank you for your feedback.
I'm afraid you have to buy a more recent version.

The action should work with Photoshop 7 and above.
I tested it with CS and CS2 and it runs without any problem.

If somebody can make a test and confirm the compatibility with photoshop 7...

Thanks. :)

Hi, and thanks for all the neat stuff!

From the limited side here .... I mean, I'm PhotoShop Challenged. I did get the action to load in my Photoshop program, but beyond that, I couldn't get it to work. It's my limited knowledge about the program and not your effort to share.

I can get started but then I get lost. Maybe theres a tutorial some where which I could follow to make this work for me. I believe once I get one of these done, I'll be good to go on all of em.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Danny,

That's exactly what I'm doing right now ! :)
But the tutorial will be mute because I don't feel enough confortable in english to make a record.
But I guess to watch how things are done will help you...

Thank you Dom for taking the time to pass this on to us.
I have a couple of comix type actions but this is the best of the bunch.
It works great!!!

Thanks very much for the action. It works beautifully. I think it would need a special show to incorporate it into Proshow, but I guess it would make a change from the old black & white fade to colour. Hey, could be B&W cartoon to colour cartoon to colour photo

I produced cartoons of my grandchildren while I was trying it out. They loved them :D

For some reason I could not get the tutorial to run from the HTML page, despite having macromedia flash installed. However by associating the files with Quicktime they played for me.

Thank you very much for the compliment.
Even if I really don't think I'm a genius unfortunately  , I really appreciate your support.
Make me feel I don't work for nothing and that people do appreciate what I try to offer. Nice feeling for my ego.

To be honest, I'm working really hard to rebuild my site as fast as possible... but I enjoy it  even if the upload process, writing descriptions, making thumbnails is a little bit painful.

I want to hurry because I have many other projects I would like to do and to share but I want my site to be back to full force before.

Dom,

I'm so happy you're starting to get up and running. I downloaded the flip book effect. Now the $64,000 question...any tutorial...can it be used in proshow...?
