Playing with transitions

Postby BarbaraC » Wed May 05, 2010 6:20 am

Over on my blog (ProShowThink) I've added a simple tutorial about how to play with transitions, combining them to create special effects. It gives a setup with an example effect that's meant only to give you a jumping-off place. For those who've never played games with transitions, I think you'll have some fun: http://proshowthink.wordpress.com/category/proshow-how-to/

Alexandra, just use the same setup as a starting point, changing the transitions out for other ones to see what happens. Maybe change the timing. Add a second layer with its own transition. That's all I did. Just play with it because you aren't going to break a single thing. The worst that can happen is you could end up with something like I did where a cat morphed into a human face. It was really freaky. :D

Once you've mastered the transitions between layers, PSP users may want to try playing with the layer transitions between two or more layers. Try the transitions all at the same time and then by offsetting them a tad.

For instance,
the last keyframe of layer 1 will start a 1s transition at 4 seconds
the first keyframe of layer 2 will start a 1s transition at 3 seconds.
In this case you'll see a mixed transition during the time between 3 and 4 seconds.

Then, mix it up a little
the last keyframe of layer 1 will start a 1s transition at 4 seconds
the first keyframe of layer 2 will start a 1s transition at 3.5 seconds.
In this case you'll see a layer 1 transition only between 3s and 3.5s, a mixed transition during the time between 3.5s and 4 seconds, and only the layer 2 transition between 4s and 4.5s.

As Barbara said, it's just playing with the various transitions to see how they interact between layers and/or slides and to see what works with what. In time, you'll find what looks good, what looks interesting , what doesn't work, and what you prefer!

Have fun!

Thanks, Dale, (& thanks, Barbara - for starting this thread)

I did not think about "Inner" transitions - to be combined with "Outside" ones.

Be fearless! When I was learning Producer, I made some great stuff now and then right in the middle of monumental messes, and I still do. Out of chaos, so they say, life began. :D

Barbara didn't get to be a master at this stuff by NOT messing things up either on purpose or by accident!

Few of us got to where we are with this program w/o going this route. Trying stuff ... or finding out that you were trying stuff only because you made a mistake is a great learning experience (sometimes you may not see it that way at first . . . especially when you're putting in a late nighter or you're in the middle of a "I've gotta get this thing done" show). :D (and I say that kinda tongue-in-cheek 8) )

Aw shucks.... I was hoping to see a real example without first having to do the work. I'm just too darn busy to play today.

Debbie, I bet you've tied Producer in knots periodically like the rest of us because you got to playing hard. That's really all this is: urging the newbies to get in there and break stuff so they can produce a few gems. You've come up with a lot of your own gems without a gram of help from me. As a matter of fact, I remember well my early days when you, Dale, and a number of others were holding MY hand! :D

Hi Barbara,

I'm one of the newbeeies that you mentioned in you post..lol.. I'm trying the transition play per your instructions. But I'm confused on step 3. You say, "within slide A and as a transition in". What exactly do you mean "within transition A"? Do you mean to use as a transition into slide A, or is there a way to put a transition into a slide? I know this is probably a silly question...but oh well.

This forum has been so helpful to me. Thanks so much for your help.

Sue, in Producer you can put a transition at the first keyframe and the last one in addition to and separate from the transitions you place between slides. Take a look at the motion screen for a slide where you've placed an image. On the left will be the marker for keyframe 1 where there's a transition that's set to zero seconds. Slide the bar to the right and change the transition to whatever you want. Do the same with the transition out for keyframe 2. These transitions are separate from those you place between slides.

Hope I helped. :D

Thanks Barbara!!! I've been playing around with key frames, but never knew about the transistion within the slide. I've just down loaded the latest PSP manual from photodex. Guess I'm gonna have to read it as well...lol. To be honest, I've learn more from ProShow Enthusiasts than I have from the books. I just got my copy of Secrets of PS Experts. Can't wait to read it as well.

Thanks again for all you help.
