Question about music

Postby classieladydi » Sat Oct 06, 2007 2:56 am

Hi all. newbie here....I am experiencing with slide shows ( just family and friends for now) and i have been reading issues on music rights. How does this work? I have made several shows for friends who retired or children's graduation and did not charge anything to do these as i am a beginner and it gives me an good opportunity to experiment. I had them give me the songs that they would like in the show. What is legal and not legal. I did one for my daughter who lives 800 miles away with her and her husband and our 2 year old Grand-baby that my husband and I miss them all so much especially now with a grand-daughter we see only twice a year. It came out beautiful and I used a song called Home or I wanna come home by Micheal Bubble. It was the perfect song. My daughter called and cried, said it was so beautiful. Now I'm thinking i can get in some sort of trouble if i ever decide to do this on the side and use any type of music.... Can you give me input on this subject?
Thanx. Diane

As Jan indicates, this is a frequent topic and there's no simple, easy answer. Further, you'd have to be a lawyer or hire one to even begin to get advice you could trust in court. Now with that said, here are a couple other threads you might want to check out.

Particularly relevant might be: http://www.proshowenthusiasts.com/viewt ... ight+music

I'm no lawyer either but as a practical matter my take on the situation is that if a person legally owns the music track, uses it in a slide show that is not sold commercially or otherwise used to generate revenue, then it seems extremely unlikely that anyone will come after you--and prior case law indicates you're likely to win any court action on "fair use" grounds. But there are no absolutes when it comes to law, courts and lawyers.

If you want to be 100% safe, then you need to look for (free or paid) music which grants the specific right for multimedia use and is royalty free. There is such out there--but that will excludes virtually all commercially released music in download or CD form. One source that lots of people here have used is Digital Juice (google it if you're interested). Their material is specifically intended for such use and is has no usage restriction. The "gotcha" is that it isn't free, not even close. But if you wait for their one-day specials, the price is pretty reasonable for what you get.

Is there 'ANYTHING FREE' these days

Postby Curtiscop » Wed Nov 14, 2007 7:13 am

Hi 'Fellow ProShower's',

In regards to music for our shows, have any of you found any 'Royalty Free' music sources that are either 'FREE' or very low costs? Don't want to sound like someone who is looking 'for something, but don't want to pay for it'. Naaaaa .... it's just the royalty free music I've come across would require me to sell my first born or one of my kidneys. Don't really want to do either one. I could get away without a 'toe' maybe !!!

Thanks Everyone,

Totally Free Music

Postby Shaker » Wed Nov 14, 2007 7:56 am

Believe it or not, the following site appears to provide a good variety of totally free music to be used in any way you wish, provided that credit is given to Kevin MacLeod.

http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

It sounds too good to be true, but the conditions of use are clear and I have taken them at their word. The site invites donations.

Hope this helps.

Free Royalty Free Music

Postby Curtiscop » Wed Nov 14, 2007 8:16 am

Shaker,

Thanks for the link .... I sure don't mind giving anybody credit for their hard work. I thought it would be a nice idea to post a request for people to add their favorite links they've found for use with ProShow. In just the short time I've been on the site I've added so many great inks like yours. But I KNOW there's so many more out there.

Again, 'Thanks',

Which reminds me of this: I have a "library" of classical music called the "Vienna Master Series" that was all copyrighted in Germany but includes orchestras and quartets from other parts of the world. It's a complete mess of groups and places, and I'd defy anyone to figure out whom to even contact for permission to use any of it. This is one of those cases where I couldn't imagine worrying about someone coming to get me for using a short overture or whatever in a slide show.

Anyone with thoughts on this?

I have just revisited the site:

http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

and find that some of the music may be a little slow for some people's tastes. Don't forget that Audacity lets you alter the tempo without affecting the pitch, so speed can easily be adjusted.

Only problem at the moment, for those who don't yet have Audacity, is it refuses to download from its site which is:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If anyone can find ways of downloading it, please say.

There does seem to be something up with the site and a pop up window with a fill in blank to download when available, but ...

I killed this popup, clicked on my popup bar at the top of XP to be able to download, went through the download process again, got the popup window, did nothing and a few seconds later it downloaded successfully.

Reccommend you try more than once :D

Audacity download problem

Postby Shaker » Thu Nov 15, 2007 5:08 am

Brian,

Thanks for your reponse. I have tried daily for about a week and did this because my daughter in Canada had the same problem. We each got an Internet Explorer error.

I click on download version 1.2.6, it then says it is downloading but after a few seconds comes up with the IE error.

Could you please give a bit more detail about how you did it successfully, so I can follow it step by step.

Many thanks.

I'd have to try and go through it again, and I'm not sure how I did it, but it worked.

Might be simpler to try this link http://www.download.com/3000-2170_4-10606824.html . This is a safe site.

Brian,

Your suggestion worked perfectly. Very many thanks. There had seemed no end to the problem except to wait till things righted themselves.

I have e-mailed the URL to my daughter in Canada.
