New build - 1974 now available !!

Postby gpsmikey » Tue Aug 14, 2007 10:19 pm

There is a new build, version 1974 now up on the Photodex
site. I guess I waited long enough working up the courage
to install 1967 that there is a new target. Who's gonna
go first :?: :?: :?:

Yeah, what she said -- we love you Andy !! :D

I notice that while Cherub seemed happy so far with the new
build, Barbara_K in the PSG side had a problem with it loading
their demo show when it opened and went back to 1967 (from
the yahoo group, there was apparently (very briefly !!) a build
1969 up last night that someone tried, had problems and went
to re-download it and it had already changed to 1974. I sure
hope they get this right before my year runs out ... ( I still think
that those of that got sucked in with their pricing scam in December
should at least get another year!! ) :?

Here's a question for the collective mind of the Borg -- how come
Producer is a 27.8 meg download (with all of it's extra "features")
and Gold is 31.6 megs ?? The "little brother" of Producer is 4 megs
bigger ??

(inquiring minds are wandering around on the loose again ... ) :D

Heh -- actually, I'm off to my shop to make some sawdust -- need to add a
shelf and some other stuff to my computer desk for all that new Digital Juice
stuff I got recently. More sawdust is required !!

For goodness sakes Mikey, how long are you going to hold onto that grudge since it will only get you an ulcer? :(

I say this with a sincere and caring purpose - let it go.....

Well, actually, I hadn't even thought about until I was thinking about
the fact I was coming up on a year pretty soon -- and they still don't
have it right (but they are getting closer). Which reminds me -- I need
to renew my annual antivirus subscription in the next week or so too !!

Hope you don't think I'm trying to beat you up over this Mikey. Surely nothing in this world is perfect, including any of us. :D

All the best....

Downloaded and installed 3.0.1974.

I'm a sucker for trying new things. Got bit with MS Vista, however.
Put it on my wife's computer and have had nothing but trouble
since. Fortunately, I stuck with XP on mine and it's chugging
along fine.

No Debbie -- I didn't figure you were trying to beat me up

Thanks Ken for your input -- several people over in the yahoo group
are having issues with the new version, but I'm not sure if it is a
real problem or just one of those things that hasn't been sorted out
yet (like not removing the temp .pxc file which I have had really
scramble things either on a new version or if it just gets corrupted).
I usually remove that temp file if I install a new version and let
it get rebuilt just out of habbit.

I often wondered about this too. My guess is that Gold is actually a Producer in disguise, and 4 MB are spent in telling it to block this and that. :) :)
I'm sure that the guys in the "reverse engineering department" will have a better answer for you, if you ever venture on their side of the fence. :)

Mikey, about your renewal of Anti-Virus: You might try the free AVG. Does an excellent job with minimal pain. (very light on system resources)
This way, next time when you install Producer, you won't have to disable your A/V first. :)

Cherub

Funny you say that - this is exactly what I was thinking even though I'm not a software programmer and really know little to nothing of how they are even written.

A clever engineer friend of mine once pointed out he figured that stereo equipment models of the same brand were all the same on the inside. The only thing different was that they had different cover/face plates. His lower end model was only missing a button/switch or two to make the other features work that were on the more expensive model. He found this out by acquiring the schematics of the model he purchased and of the upgraded model. When he compared the drawings, they were the same.

So he went to Radio Shack and bought the buttons/switches, opened the case, connected them to the wires and voila - upgraded his stereo. Now granted, this was 25 years ago or so but may be the way some companies still make their stuff - it's more cost effective I guess in production.

Actually Debbie, there is a lot of truth to that (still is). It is far
easier to write the full program (or design the full hardware) then
simply use conditional compilation to determine which options/features
are enabled. Notice that for many versions of software that you
buy, you download the program then depending on what key
you have purchased, you get different versions. Look at the
circuit boards inside lots of stuff -- all sorts of spaces for additional
chips usually - just for a different version in many cases and different
firmware loaded on the microprocessor that runs it all. Everything
these days is run by an embedded processor!! The "That Was EAsy"
button from Staples, everything (well, maybe not the wood pencil ... )

Cherub - actually, I use F-Prot antivirus (their low end corp license
gives me 10 machines for about $50 per year with a number of features
I like - including a small memory footprint). If the truth be known,
it is generally very well behaved and I never even turn it off when
I install stuff. Unlike something like Symantec that is such a memory
hog, that you can barely run notepad.exe !! (I keep the Symantec
disks right next to the AOL disks ... as far from my computer as I can  ).
