BEST FILE SETTING FOR HD TV ADS

Postby Bob Harper » Tue Sep 01, 2015 6:23 am

NOTE: Using Producer 7

Hi-

I have become extremely comfortable working with Producer
and actually prefer the workflow environment better than my new
video editing software, Vegas Pro 13 even though there are a number
of limitations. (At least at this stage anyway)

I have some TV ads coming up and I'd prefer to create them
or at least parts of them in Proshow and then output the best file
possible to Vegas for final touches, clean-up and any conversions needed etc.

I've done a few ads in the past in ProShow but of course can't find
my notes as to what format and settings I ended up using for the best
overall quality.

Any thoughts, suggestions etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I thank you!
Bob

I'm not sure - I think you would probably get a better answer(s) over in the Sony Vegas forums - there are some gearheads over there that have come up with some ways to really tweak the render process and also which codec is best as an intermediate (I think they still prefer Cineform, but I'm not sure). In the past, I just did it as an uncompressed avi, but that was when I was just working with regular DVD's for the kids soccer games etc. (export from Proshow as uncompressed AVI then import into Vegas - it seemed to work very well, but make sure you have disk space - those uncompressed files get BIG!! )

You can't have too many gadgets or too much disk space !!

Thanks gpsMikey-

Yeah, I know what ya mean about avi.
I tried a custom mp4 at highest settings and
then took it over to Vegas.

From there exported that with a cool codec
I got for free and subsequently made a template
for same in Vegas.

It's an Avid 1080-60i DNxHD in a h264 mov.
Looks clear as a bell and checking with one
of the media outlets (Comcast), they actually
listed that one as acceptable. I think if I do
the custom mp4 or mov h264 out of proshow
it should be more than fine.

I'll tell ya, when they take proshow to 64bit
(which I heard they ARE working on, and
tweak a couple more things like adding
audio scrubbing, arrow button object moving capabillities etc etc.
it could really become a cool video editor in its own right...
different but an interesting way to approach video.

Thanks again for your thoughts!
Bob

I should have added (although you probably already know this) the best thing you can do if you are using any compressed video format is render initially to the same format as will be the final so that Vegas or whatever editor you are using does not have to re-encode the video again. That is what will kill your quality - if you create the initial video in the final resolution/framerate etc. so that Vegas only has to do something with the changed parts, you will get the best results. Almost all of the compressed formats (mp4, mpeg2 etc.) are lossy formats and anytime you re-compress, you lose detail/quality. If you find a good combination that works, the best thing you can do is take good notes and screenshots so that later you remember which foot to stand on and how many bat wings you used

Wes-
Thanks for the re-affirm on a custom mp4.
May I ask what settings you like to use?

Mikey-
Yep, good point.
Although I knew that it never hurts to hear it
again because many time when the world's about
to end it's all because of the "little" things we overlook.

You know, like gee, is it plugged in? :)

Thanks gents...
