John, you provided my first laugh of the day! We all end up periodically editing our edits that are edits of the original. Too bad we can't do this as efficiently in real life, right?

Has anyone (I didn't see any mention of this in the previous posts) noticed the claimed compiled reduction in video sizes? For me personally this would be a major improvement.

Hi,

I confirm that the discount code is still in effect.
You should have received a private mail from MG giving you a code for the 20% discount.
If not, just send a PM to MG.

Hello,

From Photodex :

"Optimized Video Output
ProShow 7 introduces a smarter video encoding technology resulting in noticeably better picture quality and smaller video file sizes. Most shows will benefit from a 50% reduction in file size!"

For mp4 video file, with same output parameters, I see a very small difference between PSP6 and PSP7 : 441 Mo versus 452 Mo for the same show.

I think they refer to the use of the CRF (Constant Rate Factor) , and for the same show I got the following results :

with CRF=20 : video 10,2 Mb/s = 307 Mo
with CRF = 18 : video 13,7 Mb/s = 413 Mo
with CRF = 17 : video = 15,9 Mb/s = 780 Mo
with CRF = 10 : video = 45,1 Mb/s = 1,33 Go

The default value for the CRF is set to 20 in PSP7

I could not read anything about this CRF in the Producer User Guide, but I found this article on the net :

http://slhck.info/articles/crf

I do not know if this helps .

Hmmm - I guess they are using the term CRF for their rendering. I am used to seeing it called CBR (Constant Bit Rate) as opposed to VBR (Variable Bit Rate). It does sound like the rendering is producing similar sized files between the versions. Video is very tricky and there are a number of ways you can increase the efficiency, but some of them require some serious hoop jumping (over in the video forums, one of the popular ways involves using several external programs such as handbrake and a frame server to get multiple passes (unlike a zip file of images for example, video has a number of different types of frames in the stream and depending on which ones are where and how they are implemented, you can get significantly better "compression" (see I frames, B frames and P frames if you want total brain overflow)))

Interesting information [mimifurby]. Thank you. I'd like to hear from Photodex also with a comparison. If Photodex could post a video from version 6 and the same video from version 7 with all of the details from V7 including the V6 output size and V7 output size it would be worth having a look.

This would help those of us on the edge to make the decision. I'd prefer seeing a sample of the results both in numbers and in visual. Say, a side by side video done in V6 and V7 so I can look for the claimed improvements in output quality.

I'd also like to know if this claimed quality improvement and size reduction is for just mp4 files or across the board including those uploaded to the Photodex gallery.

Too many unanswered questions for Photodex to pull the switch on a purchase. The only thing I personally see as a selling factor in V7 is video improvement and they are going to have to show me proof before I open the wallet.

One thing I have noticed with version 7 - I I upload the 1080 mp4 file to vimeo, it goes much faster on the upload and also on the processing time.

I tend to render to 1080p 60fps so I can get really high quality, and I suppose I get what I deserve: it takes a really long time to render. However, upload times to YouTube depend on the time of day and the day of the week. Is it possible it's the same with Vimeo and you've happily lucked out in your timing?

Barbara, I don't think timing has anything to do with it, as I've noticed it a number of times recently. After a recent trip I put up 16 shows at different times and was quite surprised at how fast they went up and were processed.

Has anyone else who uses vimeo noticed this change with version 7 of Producer?

I suppose only Photodex can answer the question about whether they've changed the way in which video is uploaded, but now you've gotten me wondering if maybe Vimeo has changed things. Half the equation is the upload, but the other half is how quickly the server "accepts" the upload. On YouTube, if it's very busy, your upload can end up in a queue of videos waiting to be processed. (I stay away from it on Saturdays and Sundays!)
