Re: Linnux
No, Proshow is not going to run on any of the Linux flavors. It needs windows in some version. (I run Ubuntu Linux on my file server, but windows on most other things here).

Re: Linnux
Hi Mikey, thanks for that. I was considering running Ubuntu Linus on my PC but will have to go back to Firefox. this is the 2nd time I have been hit by a virus on my Google Chrome and am getting tired of having to reformat each time. Hence the question.

Well, while Linux does not "catch" windows virus (viri?), your comment about Firefox and Chrome are a bit confusing. Firefox and Chrome are browsers - windows and Linux (and others) are operating systems. The browsers run on top of the operating systems. There are a number of things you can do to prevent infection (or recover from a bad one). If you are using a broadband connection, put a router between you and the outside - that blocks many of the probing "fingers" out there trying to get into your machine. Make sure you have a good antivirus and the database for it is up to date. Quit surfing those porn sites Not having an antivirus on any machine that connects to the outside world is just asking for trouble (and then, when your machine gets infected, in many cases it helps infect others).
You can also use an imaging utility to make an image of your drive and save it on another (physically different) drive. If you have a drive crash or it gets badly infected/corrupted, you can recover from the image which will reset your drive back to when you made the image (including whatever you had installed at the time). Reminds me - time to re-image my C drive - it has been several months.

Re: Linnux
HI again Mikey, yes sorry if you got confused I still do get that way. But hes I have windows 7 ultimate, I was using Google Chrome and Firefox. I had to use Firefox in order to watch the shows you guys post on the web page. This morning I noticed I had this virus (can't remember the name and my machine has been disconnected from the internet for now) but the last time I got it I had my neighbor help me as we had to install Ubuntu before I could get windows back on. Fortunately I backed up all my files etc just over a week ago on to a portable hard drive. I thought I could unistall Google Chrome but it won't let me keeps tell me window are open and I can't find anything open on it. Hence the disconnection of my PC from the Internet for now. I have a router and I use AVG but think it may be time to upgrade to something even stronger if there is such a thing IN the meantime I am using my husbands PC which used to be mine anyhow. I have also switched off Facebook on my Mobile and am not sure if I should even consider using my mobile on the Internet for now. Not sure if the virus can get into it or not. What a way to start Xmas:-)

Re: Linnux
Yeah, definitely not a good way to start Christmas !! I think AVG in general is fairly good although I have not looked at antivirus ratings recently. The router definitely helps block the incoming connection attempts (look at it like a telephone with the ringer disconnected - you can call out and you can talk to others, but you never see the junk phone calls (most of them from Asia or Russia). I know people that have replaced a simple router with a Linux machine acting as a firewall for example and were absolutely horrified when they looked at the logs and saw how many connection attempts were being made every minute !! Some malware is fairly easy to remove (others require a thermonuclear device!!). If you notice something, go to a different machine and CAREFULLY search for how to remove the bad thing if you can find it's name. Do a scan with AVG (it does support scanning doesn't it?) - see what it reports and if it can remove it. Malware can be a real pain. There are also some bad ones out there like Cryptolocker that will encrypt all your data (and image) files then demand something like $300 to provide you with the key to decrypt the files. I know a number of people that have run into that one. Bah humbug !!

Re: Linnux
I use AVG and Malwarebytes to stay ahead of things. They seem to work pretty good.

Re: Linnux
So Mikey, you are saying there isn't a good anti virus for porn sites? (I'm joking! I'm joking!)
Re: Linnux
There is actually an excellent solution that always works ... don't go there ( or do it from a virtual machine ). You can always boot ubuntu linux from a DVD and just run in RAM essentially having a virtual machine too. Virtual machines are actually a neat way to test out installations of things - if they screw up the virtual machine, you just delete it and make another clone from your master. Nothing lost. The trick is to be sneaky

Ah, sounds way too complicated. Think I'll just stay away. Or just follow the tramps in the entertainment industry.
