Kris, welcome to the forum.

One of the things to remember for DVD is that the resolution is fixed by the DVD standards, and it is very low. A PAL DVD is 720/704 by 576 pixels and NTSC even lower at 720/704 by 480. The 720/704 being the 16:9 or 4:3 image ratios. This is the best you can get. You can get worse apparent resolution by an increase in the compression ratio of the mpg (vob) file to increase the recording time of a DVD. This is not normally a problem as most shows are short in time duration (under an hour).

To get a better resolution you will need to go to blueray, this will give about a six times better picture. If you have a Sony blueray player, Mike Gregg has several posts on recording blueray quality to standard DVD and playing them back.
